The reason why "humanity is still full of hope" is because James' message at the airport was found and deciphered by scientists in 2036 after he completed his mission, which means that there will be more clues that have not been found— -Because the chain effect hasn't gone that far -Because of James' message, Jose traveled back to 1996 from the future, and gave James a gun and said "you can still be a big hero", which implies Jose actually already knew that the scientist assistant was the source of the virus, and Jose wanted James to kill him. But although James saw the scene of his death long ago, because he always thought it was a dream, he didn't tell anyone about it. So when James walked into the airport, he was both excited and terrified. So the chain effect proceeds to the beginning of the film, which is also the scene of James' "dream" - James fell with a gun. Next, the virus began to spread according to that assistant's itinerary.
I believe there is absolutely no end to the story, and definitely not absolute darkness - because before James died, Kathryn discovered the true carrier of the virus source and told James her discovery in front of Jose. Kathryn, or Jose, finally found the right path after a string of wrong paths. So you will see at the end of the film, the scientist in 2036 traveled back in person and had a "kind" exchange with the virus source carrier.
