The two stories are actually not contradictory, they together express the beauty of human nature

Everyone knows that tiger and pie represent two parts of a person. Many people think that pie represents religious belief, but I think pie represents reason (he does not believe in reason, but the story uses him to show reason) that is his father's belief, and his father believes in a god called reason , omniscient, omnipotent, and powerful. Pi before the drift doesn't like his father's rationality, even if that's right, because he doesn't understand beauty and love in rationality yet, so he doesn't. But in the rafting he survived on the strength of his father, the knowledge of fishing, the method of sailing, etc., and he felt happy from it: "I never thought that a little garbage can bring so much happiness, then a pile of tools and a bucket A knife and a pencil may turn into greater happiness." He understood his father, his father was not cold and heartless, but wise and correct, but his love was hidden in the knowledge that taught him to live (mother understood that the reason of his father's beliefs is beautiful , so I will marry my father~). The pie expresses the value of reason, the beauty of reason, and the pie represents reason.

Then there is the tiger. Some people think that the tiger represents the bestiality, but I don't think so, because when Pai was rescued at the end, even though he knew the tiger would go, he still hoped that the tiger would look back at him, so that must be something he liked, that is - Faith in the soul. (The belief in the sect has always been the soul, not the religion. The religions are very similar, but they are not. That’s why he asked so many questions about religion, and he believed in 3 religions. He wanted to find the right one.) Soul too His mother's belief, her mother's belief is not religion! The video mentions: "My mother went to college and she also thought our family was part of the new India. But her parents refused to give him any more living expenses because they thought she was going to marry Benito, the only thing she had with her The connection of the past is our religious belief” is a misunderstanding, he didn’t understand at the time that what was left of the mother was not religion, but the soul of the past. The father is against religion, the mother's belief is not religion, otherwise it is impossible to give up everything and marry the father! (Father understands the soul of mother's belief, that's why he falls in love with her~) As for why the soul? Before drifting, the film spent a lot of time saying: He wants to make friends with Tiger and prove his father is wrong. We and Tiger have a soul. As long as we work hard, Tiger will also have friendship with him. Tiger has always been the sustenance of Pi's beliefs. So while the tiger was helpless in the water and he had the axe, any rational person would have killed the tiger, but he didn't, because that was his belief. And in the movie "I would be dead now without Richard Parker, my fear of him keeps me alert and caring for his needs keeps my life focused". Why take care of tigers? Pai's reasoning is not tenable at all, the tiger attacked Pai and the result was that the tiger was helpless in the water while he was holding an axe. So the meaning of this sentence is: If I can take care of it, I may be able to get his friendship, I don't know how long I will live, this is the only chance. For my faith, I want to live! Finally, on the eve of the storm, the tiger was looking at the bottom of the sea, and when Pi saw it, he also looked at the bottom of the sea. When Pi was watching, the tiger also looked at Pi. The story can't tell what the tiger saw, only what we saw, and that wasn't a killing! Not death! That's the soul, the animal, the human, what he knows, what he doesn't know, the soul of all life. We don't know what Tiger saw, but it must have been the most cherished thing in his life. At that moment, they understood that each other also has a soul. So in the storm, he sent the tiger to see the beauty of the storm, because he knew that the tiger had a soul, and the tiger understood this beauty. And when Pie felt like he was going to die and said, "God, thank you for giving me my life, I'm ready" He wasn't disappointed, he wasn't scared, because he knew his beliefs were right, we and the tiger, all life There is a soul. In this lifeboat in the ocean, we are not alone with each other, and in this vast world, we are not alone! Because the soul accompanies the soul. The story understands Pi through the tiger's gaze, and proves the existence of the soul, the value of the soul, the beauty of the soul, and the tiger represents the soul. (But when he was rescued, he didn't cry because the tiger didn't look back at him, it was because he realized a mistake he made, which is very important and will be discussed separately later)

The most important thing in this work is the connection between the two plots in the two stories, the fantasy and the believable! The two stories echo and explain each other! The first pair speaks of the imperfections of reason, the second of the imperfections of the soul.

The first pair is the fight between the animals in the first story and the fight between people in the second story (credible explains the fantasy). Don't worry about which animal represents who in the second story. Animals and people both represent the battle of two concepts! In the first story, the zebra is wounded, and after dying from an infection (note that the zebra is already dead), the hyena eats the zebra. The orangutan beat the hyena, and the hyena killed the orangutan in revenge. In the end the tiger killed the hyena. The second story explains the first: the cook and the hyena represent reason, it's them! Both zebras and sailors are eaten after they die, and it is absolutely true within the realm of reason to eat the dead and use their bodies to save others on a lifeboat that is running out of food. The role of the mouse, the chef is a very witty person, the chef's fishing skills, etc., are all rational efforts to make more people survive. As both the orangutan and the mother are expressing the soul's peculiar love for another soul, only the soul condemns what is absolutely right for reason. But reason couldn't understand what was wrong, the cook killed the mother. Pie kills the chef, but believes the chef knows he's made a mistake, even by his standards. Because reason does not allow harming innocent people. Finally, the devil in the second story killed the cook because he did not understand rational efforts at the time, so he was forever condemned by the soul, which is the appearance of the tiger (soul) in the first story. Here the chef hurts the innocent mother, and reason hurts the innocent soul. Without a soul, reason errs.

The second pair of storylines is Pie leaving Andy remembering everything but forgetting to say goodbye (this is a plot that belongs to the second story! Because it's believable!) and the first story where Pie and the tiger are rescued when they are rescued Saying goodbye, he wanted the tiger to look back at him, but the tiger didn't (Fantastic explained believable). He is very sad, why? It wasn't because he was sure that he and the tiger had a friendship after sharing weal and woe. He hoped that the tiger would just give him a small look, but the tiger didn't go away forever. But because he knew that he did the same thing to Andy before he got the power of reason, he remembered everything with another soul like the tiger, but forgot to say goodbye. Pie didn't realize it was a permanent separation, so he forgot to say goodbye. If there is reason, it would never make such a mistake, and the tiger does not realize it, because he represents the soul, and the soul cannot do it. Without reason, the soul errs.

Finally, there is the cannibal island, which represents the bestiality (this is the third part of human beings), that is not salvation! It was a beautiful trap, and the story of the fish and the dead man made it clear that they were eaten by the island, and it was the bestiality that lured them. That man, like a fish, stayed voluntarily in order to survive, only knowing to eat food, digest, eat food, digest, completely forgetting his relatives. Live like a beast, only for survival, not for love, faith, it's animal nature! And what about pie? Fortunately, he had the power of reason to help him understand what happened to fish and dead humans. The power to possess a soul (the tiger returns to the ship every day) knows: a soul would rather die than stay on an island and suffer loneliness! Reason and soul together defeated the animal nature!
The love between Pi and Andy and the plot of Pi tying the amulet sent by Andy to the Cannibal Island are also corresponding, but it has nothing to do with the animal nature of the Cannibal Island, and it has nothing to do with the cannibal island. Evil has nothing to do! This is a very beautiful plot. Pie tied the amulet that Andy sent to the man-eating island before Pie found the fish and teeth. At that time, he really thought that the island was the same as Andy in the past, when he was most suffering Time came to save him, so Pi did it out of love for Andy!

The battle with the chef over food showed the contradiction between the soul and reason. The mother was reluctant to eat meat because she believed that animals had souls. Chefs believe in reason, so they don't understand it, and feel that this kind of food waste is very stupid. This seems to be the fundamental contradiction, and the whole story unfolds to resolve this contradiction. Mother does not eat meat because she loves the soul of life. The chef is not willing to waste, because he wants everyone to be fed, to survive, and to love the sanity of life. They are both loving a part of life, but not understanding each other.

Reason and soul make mistakes without each other. They are lovers, like pie's mom and dad.

The two stories are not in conflict, they together express the unity of reason and soul, which is the beauty of human nature.

Life of Pi quotes

  • Writer: [reading off the report] Mr. Patel's is an astounding story, courage and endurance unparalleled in the history of ship-wrecks. Very few castaways can claim to have survived so long, and none in the company of an adult Bengal tiger.

  • Santosh Patel: Spectacle. Don't let the stories and pretty lights fool you, boys. Religion is darkness.
