When you see the middle of the movie, it is not difficult to think of the themes of the two movies "Boom Drummer" and "Black Swan", and many characters (keaton, watts) in this film express the same theme, which is the understanding of self. Confusion and doubt, the insecurities of the characters expressed in the film come from the contradiction between self-knowledge and others' self-knowledge and the fear of accepting the real self. Keaton always wants to get compliments and affirmations from the audience and others in order to gain a moment of inner peace, but how long can this peace last? Writing this, I can't help but think of the final ending of Leslie Cheung, the shining star.
Suicide is explained in psychology, not just because the person who commits suicide simply wants to end his life, but usually goes through three stages. The first stage is the idea of suicide, the second stage is inner conflict and self-struggle, and the final stage That is, suicidal people find that only by committing suicide can they get rid of their inner pain and gain ultimate peace.
So Keaton won and lost. In Broadway plays, he won, won the applause of the audience, and won the true presentation of art, but in this battle of self-struggle, he lost, lost to himself .
Instead of begging for the affirmation of others in panic, getting recognition for yourself from the admiration of others, and finally becoming a person who sees yourself in the eyes of others instead of yourself, it is better to focus only on your own heart from the very beginning, Gain self-confidence and inner peace in knowing and accepting.
The most ironic thing in the film should be that people are currently entertaining to death. When Keaton made up his mind to go for real on stage, he just lost his nose. When he woke up, he found that people were paying attention to the truth of the shot rather than the central theme of the whole play.
