To be precise, this is not a detective film, but a suspenseful action film and an anti-superstitious science and education film. Indeed, in 21st-century cinema, a few fights must be far more polished than drowsy reasoning. After all, action pictures are the biggest advantage of movies and novels.
The whole movie is quite satisfactory, and the two character male stars are quite addicted. The only thing worth exploring in my opinion is the persistence of science in the face of all kinds of "unexplainable" illusions in an age when science didn't have the upper hand. Blackwood's threatening bizarre talk with Sherlock Holmes in prison shows that there was a hint of surprise on Holmes' face, but in the end, he insisted on using science to break the deception.
