The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

1995's "Seven Deadly Sins" (Se7en) was David Fincher's first collaboration with Brad Pitt. Pitt successfully portrayed a young, bloody, and righteous police detective, and 1999's "Fight Club" was their second collaboration, and the film is still deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, making it one of the most male films in history. After a lapse of 10 years, another "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was released. The 3-hour film tells the life story of the legend of a strange man who was born in 1919 and died in 2003.

The plot is very gorgeous. At the beginning of the movie, a lot of buttons are falling like fallen leaves. David's way of arranging the plot is also very simple. Although the color of the film sometimes sounds like a sad song, sometimes it looks like an old moldy photo, and sometimes it puts you in a fairy tale or wonderland, the characters in the 3-hour movie are very clear, without too much editing and splicing and time and space interlacing. It is simply an old woman who is dying to recount her legendary life to her daughter.

The male protagonist in this life is upside down. When he was a child, he was an old man. When he was on crutches, he was a newborn baby. He was Benjamin Button.

The happy ending filmed by Oldrich Lipsk in 1966 is also backward. With the narrative method of rejuvenation, the protagonist goes from being sentenced to death, to murder, and then to why he kills. As well as marriage, marriage, acquaintance, growth, children, and finally the swaddle that belongs to the mother, this film is more worthy of attention because not only does the plot develop backward, but also the shooting method is backward, just like a cup of water that has been spilled back into the cup. Reproduction of this process

Going back to Benjamin, David's shooting is even more gorgeous. Leaving aside the plot, this kind of production and shooting is also a masterpiece of art. For example, in the scene where Cate Blanchett was crushed by a car and broke her calf, her dancing career and even her whole life changed. You can say that David is the narrator. You can also say that David is an editor. And you can say that he is a naughty kid who does whatever he wants. He's a philosopher who thinks so well about time and can be so beautiful in the form of light and shadow that it's ballet-like, forceful, and rhythmic. This is not a simple editing problem, but a kind of naked thinking about life.

The name Benjamin can be traced back to the "Bible" Jacob's youngest son, Benjamin, is the most favored young son of Accord. The film starts timed in 1919 and ends Benjamin's life in 2003. There are several age comparisons between the hero and heroine. For example, when the war ended in 1945, when he returned home, it was the first time Benjamin met Daisy as an adult. In the most splendid and prosperous years of their lives, Benjamin was a middle-aged old man with the wrinkles and vicissitudes of life. He loves her, but he encounters the biggest embarrassment in love: you are so beautiful and young, but I am so ugly and old. The second time they met was in 1962. Benjamin had the face of a young man, and Daisy was a mature woman. They finally embraced and kissed with all their hearts and started their love life. The third time they met was more than ten years later. This time, it was Daisy's turn with a face full of vicissitudes, while Benjamin's face showed no trace of years, and the two hugged again. Immediately separated, the biggest balance in love is gone, so you can only leave.

David's thoughts have been vividly reflected in the previous films. We are more familiar with the seven deadly sins, the fight club, the game, or the opposite sex. They are not only extreme but also point to the embarrassment or hidden shadows that people dare not touch. And "Benjamin Button" is refreshing and refreshing, the male monologue of the film seems to be emanating from our cavity, low and soft. We can temporarily include him in a biographical film; it tells us very plainly and calmly: some people were born to sit by the river; some are struck by light; some have ears for music; some are artists; some swin; some know buttons; some know Shakespeare; some are mothers, and some people dance...

This life is fixed, it is fixed from the mother's womb. Even if there are many accidents, it is an accumulation of little by little factors that we can't control. All I can do is spread my hands to greet...

In this third collaboration between David Fincher and Pete, the biggest difference from the past is that Pete has changed his youthful spirit. Even when he lived alone in India, Pete was so deep. Of course, he was in his sixties or seventies at that time. But with a face that has no trace of years. After all these years, Brad Pitt's interpretation of "Benjamin Button" is still as melancholy and soulful as in 1992's "A River Runs Through It" or 1994's "Legends of the Fall". The eyes are handier for the role.

  • Ngunda Oti: You'll see little man, plenty of times you be alone. You different like us, it's gonna be that way. But I tell you a little secret I find out. We know we alone. Fat people, skinny people, tall people, white people... they just as alone as us... but they scared shitless.
