epic war

Coppola's films have a strong epic style. The reason why it is called "Apocalypse Now" is that the film incorporates the author's philosophical thinking on modern civilization.

The title is taken from the book of Revelation, the last book in the New Testament of the Bible. Try to reflect, think, seek knowledge and enlightenment.

Captain Willard sailed upstream along the Mekong, a metaphor that the war itself was a setback. Until Willard reached the kingdom Coates had established in Cambodia, it was a step backward from modern civilization to primitive society.
Primitive society is full of worship of power. When Willard killed Coates, he was revered as the king of the primitive tribe. In primitive societies, witchcraft came into being when people encountered things that could not be explained.
Coppola said the book "The Golden Bough" had a great influence on him.

In the process of looking for Coates, Willard gradually realized Coates' mood and thought deeply about the war. When Willard came across a Vietnamese ship while searching, he fired wildly at it because they were hiding something under the deck, and it turned out that it was just a puppy, but several civilians died as a result. War makes people panic, makes people extremely distorted, and turns people into "killer maniacs".

Complementary standard. A waterway psychedelic poem that far exceeds the pattern of ordinary war films. I think it is the best work of Coppola's life, even more than the godfather.

A man who is not afraid of an enemy with a weapon, but is scared half to death by a tiger. A slaughtering madman who does not cry over the death of his comrade, but is angry at a puppy. A captain who counted eight of his own kills murmured horror as he left the execution site covered in blood. War makes people forget about morality, forget purpose and forget who they are. Poetic beauty, intoxicating soundtrack, also made me forget what war is, mistaken it for a ridiculous game

Apocalypse Now quotes

  • Photo Journalist: He can be terrible. He can be mean. And he can be right. He's a great man. I wish I had words, man. I wish I had words... I can tell ya something like the other day he wanted to kill me. Somethin' like that.

Willard: Why'd he wanna kill you?

Photo Journalist: Because I took his picture. He said "If you take my picture again, I'm gonna kill you." And he meant it! So you just lay back. Lay cool. He becomes friendly again, he really does. But you don't judge the Colonel. You don't judge the Colonel like an ordinary man.

  • Willard: [about Colonel Kilgore] Well, he wasn't a bad officer, I guess. He loved his boys, and he felt safe with 'em. He was just one of those guys with that weird light around him. He just knew he wasn't gonna get so much as a scratch here.
