Why You're WRONG About Man of Steel

There are too many original clips of the video, and it is locked by station b

It's finally time for Bat and Superman to violently resolve their differences in spectacular 3&2D special effects

At this time, it is necessary to re-examine "Man of Steel"

This film is undoubtedly one of the most polarizing comic book movies

Some people love it, some people hate it

Others like it except for some parts

We don't think Man of Steel gets a lot of bad reviews at all

We would like to explore some of the criticisms it has received

so that you can look at its sequel with a fresh understanding of its predecessor

Criticisms of Man of Steel are superficial, reasonable, and fundamentally untrue

We found that most of the people who hated the movie were in the latter category

What we're going to do is show you the most common criticisms, whether they're subjective or not

【Spoiler alert! This video is full of spoilers! 】

Then respond with creative reviews, comic history, movie clips, and common sense

Criticism mentioned in this video was taken from comments, videos, blogs, forum posts, internet messages

proper wording

This allows you to reflect on whether your views are objectively wrong

If so, you might be able to enjoy the film with fresh eyes

But first we're going to point out some nonsense that's hardly a critique, such as

【Too many advertisement placements】

Ads are absolutely not allowed in movies!

Absolutely not!

How dare they put common products and businesses in our daily lives into movies?

It's so unreasonable!

"Hey guys, let's talk about how to make a movie."

Making movies is expensive

The most expensive movies are summer blockbusters

The film reportedly cost $225 million

Tied for 12th with The Hobbit and some trash, one of the most expensive movies of all time

Where do you want them to get the money?

Anything but can't place ads?

"I'm looking for Peter Ross, do you know him?"
"Yes, he works at the IHOP restaurant."

Ad placements account for more than 70% of a movie’s budget

I think there is a point of view that

【Too many CG and action scenes】

If they cut a little bit, the movie wouldn't be so high cost and there wouldn't be so many ad placements

But if your opinion is too much action

Then this must also be your opinion on the Avengers, the X-Men and pretty much every recent comic book movie

I mean, this type of movie may not be for you, this type of movie can only use CG

Even some shots of flying and punching

Actual filming is not feasible

"Because the movie is big, we have spaceships, we have planets."
"How to show superhuman abilities? What to do?"
"From a visual effects standpoint, the idea at the time was"
"Superman has to use special effects for everything, whether it's flying, taking off, punching."
"It was proven when filming the first flight."
"He did use wire when he did stunts on the installation."
"It was to show body language or something, and after the test shot he said let's not do that."
"This is Superman, let's do it another way."

Another view is that these product placements represent capitalism

I know, it's not fashionable to mention these anymore

But Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way (which we shouldn't mention)

"Politics, does he still insist on truth and justice and all these things?"

I'm sorry to tell you that these things are capitalism

Or should capitalism be just these things?

So if you don't like product placement, then I guess you also don't like what Superman stands for

No, no, this can't be done

We don't think product placement will ruin a movie

There is at least one reason to watch this movie-

When can you see someone in a movie smashing a train through the electrical section of the Hills department store?

【Why spend so much time on Krypton? 】

[What are those stupid alien creatures? 】

In various comic strips and animated films, Krypton has many creatures, and 51 different species exist

Acid crocodiles, fighting bugs, balloons, butterfly fish, crystal birds...

These creatures are included in the movie because this is the comic book version of Krypton

Not the Richard Donner version of Krypton that everyone is used to

As for why they spend so much time on this planet

It's because the producers are trying to narratively emphasize that Superman is an alien

"Because we're doing a sci-fi movie, we're emphasizing Superman's alien identity."
"I want to spend a lot of time on Krypton."

[name of Kryptonian creature]

[Why Krypton is about to explode and put Zod in the Phantom Zone? 】

How long before Krypton exploded in the opening events of the film is uncertain

*Lyla's clothing change hints at the passage of time

Kryptonians don't know when the planet exploded

Joe Al estimates it's a few weeks

"You don't understand, Krypton's core is collapsing."
"We're probably only a few weeks away."

Kryptonian culture is very traditional

so that their leaders won't abandon their homes because of the end of the world

And there was a period of time between Zod's incarceration and Krypton's destruction, not immediately afterward.

*Lyla's clothing change hints at the passage of time

【There is no character growth in this movie】

what do you say? No character growth?

The first half of the whole movie is about character growth.

People who think so seem to think that the Carl Al we see in the movie

Has all the characteristics and values of the comic book Superman from start to finish

They didn't realize that Clark Kent didn't become Superman until the end of the movie

David Goyer, screenwriter of Man of Steel

"But you have to remember that it's akin to Superman's 'war hour.'"
"It's a movie where the world recognizes his existence, the movie where he decides to put on the Superman cape."

In the film, Clark goes from a man unsure of his place in the world trying to understand who he is

"I have a lot of questions."
"Where am I from?"
"Why did you send me here?"

Become a man ready to take on heroic responsibilities

"If I could save the planet by surrendering, shouldn't I try?"

We see Clark growing up under the guidance of Jonathan Kent

He helped Clark understand the importance of his unique abilities and the possible impact on humanity

"But somewhere you had another father who gave you another name."
"He sent you here for a reason, Clark."
"Even if it takes a lifetime, you have to find that reason for yourself."

Clark often struggles with this belief when he encounters situations that require the use of superpowers

"Clark, you can't let anyone know this side of you."

By the end of the film, Clark understands who he is and what kind of example he should set for humanity

"I'm here to help, but in my own way."

At that point, he became more like the comic Superman one would expect

Not exactly, but we'll talk about it

To say there is no character growth at all is a big mistake

[Why did Clark watch his father die foolishly? 】

"I let my father die because I trusted him."
"Because he believed I had to wait and the world wasn't ready."

Superman's idea is not "man with power save the world"

Superman is about morals, has divine powers and chooses when and why to use them

The theme embodied in this philosophy in Man of Steel is choice

Joe Al sends his son to Earth so he has a chance to choose his own destiny

Unlike other Kryptonians

"Your mother and I believe that Krypton has lost something precious, elements of choice and opportunity."
"What if a child's dream is to be a role outside of society's established position?"
"You are the embodiment of that belief, Carl."

If Carl chooses to do so, he can inspire people on earth to be better

"The expression of that hope is to make the beliefs that are fundamental in each person's potential a force for good."
"That's what you can bring them."

Jonathan Kent wants Clark to make the same choice, but from a different angle

"These changes that you go through, one day you'll feel like they're gifts."
"When that day comes, you have to make a choice."
"Whether to stand up proudly in front of humanity."

But most of all Jonathan wants his son to live a good life

If people knew who he was and what he could do, he would be expelled from society

The right to choose a normal life will be taken away

"If the world knew what you were capable of, everything would change."
"Our beliefs, our conception of humanity, everything."
"People are afraid of what they don't understand."

This is also the answer to another frequently asked question -

[Why did Clark's father say he should drown the child in the car? 】

He didn't tell Clark "yes, you should let all your kids die in order to protect yourself selfishly"

He said "maybe"

Because obviously he doesn't know the answer to that question

"What should I do? Let them die?"
"Maybe."
"It's not just our lives at stake, Clark, and it's not just the lives of those around us."

He recognized it was a complex issue, but in the end he left it to Clark who grew up

He didn't want Clark to face bad consequences before he was ready

"You just have to decide who you want to be, Clark."
"Because whatever you become, for better or for worse, you're going to change the world."

Joe Al expressed the same sentiment

"We want you to learn what is most important to being human first."
"So one day, if the time is right, you will be a bridge between the two races."
"You can save her, Carl, you can save everyone."

"The most important thing about this scene is that he reasserts my determination to help humanity."
"'You did the right thing' and I have his blessing."
"I think it's important for any child to be blessed by a parent or peer."
"My parents in this case are very specific and very important to my role."

When the tornado hits, Jonathan realizes that Clark is forced into a dilemma

Saving the father will cause him to reveal his abilities before he is ready

The right of his son to freely choose "whether or not to take responsibility for his life and strength"...

more important to him than his own life

[Can Clark save his father with super speed to avoid being seen by people? 】

You mean make Clark move super fast and then everyone who's staring at Jonathan Kent will see him disappear instantly?

In addition to getting important life lessons from Jonathan

Clark can't do that yet

As far as the audience knows, the only superpowers Clark developed at the time of the tornado were X-ray vision, thermal vision, and superpowers

*Don't forget to super heal

In fact, in the entire film, Superman doesn't show super fast speed other than flying.

We did see other Kryptonians moving fast, but not so fast that they were invisible to the naked eye

Superman in this movie can't run that fast

[Why was there a Superman uniform in the reconnaissance ship 20,000 years ago? 】

You're not seeing a superman uniform

This is the bodysuit that all Kryptonians wear

This one happens to have the Eyre family logo on it.

Since the Eyre family are all scientists, it makes sense for them to be involved in an extended mission to Krypton.

This is the uniform of superhuman ancestors

It was blue instead of black because that was probably the trend at the time

so old-fashioned

[Why didn't Lois Lane recognize Clark as Superman at the end of the film? 】

She recognized it, almost winked at him

"Louise Lane, welcome to the planet."

She always knew he was Clark Kent

"Clark!"

gram-la-gram

[Why does Louise know Clark is Superman in this movie? She shouldn't know! 】

David Goyer, screenwriter of Man of Steel

"So the thing we wonder about is shouldn't Louise know who Superman is?"
"It made her look silly."
"Even Warner Bros. asked that at first because she never knew in the previous story."
"We thought not being able to do that would make her look like a fool."
"This has to be removed if we want to be more 'close to reality'."

[Louise and Clark fell in love so fast, they just met! 】

Who said they were in love?

These are two very attractive singles who have been through a very stressful situation together

Of course they will like each other

When can a kiss be enough? Is this a kindergarten?

[The final post-war kiss is very unpleasant]

This kiss is not after the final battle

This happens after Superman comes back after destroying the world engine and saves Lois from the fall

From a filmmaking standpoint, the kiss is in the right place, after a victory

"You know they say the relationship goes downhill after the first kiss."

[Who said that "the relationship will go downhill after the first kiss"? No one ever said that! 】

What Lou Reed said, when he was wearing a chicken suit

After the first kiss, the relationship will go downhill~♪

Anyway, it's not really criticism, it's nitpicking, stop nitpicking

I don't like nitpicking, remember, remember, keep nitpicking to a minimum

[Why was Louise not sucked into the black hole? Is she heavier than a scout ship? 】

[Should the reconnaissance ship be sucked in too? 】

As Zod explained to Carl before

The technology that imprisoned Zod in the Phantom Zone was used on the Phantom Thruster, which opened the wormhole

Go to the rest of the universe through the Phantom Zone

"We transformed the Phantom Projector into a hyperdrive."
"Your father made a similar modification to the ship to send you here."

Joe El's planned black hole is to send Zod and his party back to the Phantom Zone

"We can send them back to the Phantom Zone."

Obviously, it will only attract things that have been to the Phantom Zone before, like Zod and his crew, spaceships and Superman

Apparently it also attracts rubble and junk hit by the black zero gravity beam

which does not include louise or the scout ship

The reconnaissance ship flew in the normal way, did not go through the wormhole, the crew was dormant

[Why did Zod bring Louise to the spaceship? She has no reason to follow! 】

The reason Louise was taken on the Zod ship was because

Minutes before the movie, she was taken away by the military after it was revealed on TV that she knew Superman's true identity

"Lois Lane of the Daily Planet knows who he is."

The military didn't know how much she knew about aliens, or what she could be used for

so they police anything related to aliens

So did General Zod

Apparently he saw the same show

He wants to take Louise on board to read the information and hold him hostage so they can deal with Superman

They want to know where the code is, she knows Superman so she probably knows where the code is

They can read her mind, please

"I didn't want to tell them about you, but they manipulated me, they read my mind..."

[Superman shouldn't do that when Zod threatens his mother, he destroys the building senselessly]

Yes, we admit that's not a good thing

But that's the point of the scene, a big part of the movie is the exploration of superhuman nature

In this scene we can see what happens when he gives up his self-control and loses his composure

Zach Snyder, director of Man of Steel

"You still think about this question, how far can you push him."
"Like seeing Louise injured or her mother killed makes him angry."
"Superman as we know it, can do some pretty terrible things if he wants to."
"I looked at him and thought he was just human, and then I thought, no, he's not."
"That's it, that's what makes him cool."
"I think in some ways he has human weaknesses."
"It's a little bit emotional, but you don't want to make him angry because you know who he is and he's amazing."

This isn't Superman acting as a superhero, it's Clark Kent protecting his mom

"You actually threatened my mother!"

This scene shows one of the challenges that Superman has to face, he has god-like powers

He must restrain himself at all times

He can't lose his temper like other superheroes

The bat is mad at you and you get punched in the face

Superman is mad at you? Send you a punch

[Why did Louise finally perform a bombing mission on a military plane? She shouldn't be there! 】

She's on the plane because Joe Al's projection gave her the plan

"We can send them back to the Phantom Zone."
"How to do it?"
"I can teach you."

They want to make the program as successful as possible

So it makes sense to keep the people who know the plan and know the most about alien technology on the plane in case something goes wrong

Guess what, something went wrong

Luckily she was there

"There's a problem, it shouldn't be like this."
"How should it be?"
"It should all be plugged in."
"Let me be healthy."

Do you want them to troubleshoot with the radio?

"Okay, I put that USB stick in the hole and it was magnetized like you said, but nothing happened."

"It should start, are you sure you put the USB stick in?"

"Yes, it was magnetized like you said, and it fired lightning, but the thing still didn't start."

"Lightning? Joe El didn't say lightning, where did you see the lightning?"

"Lightning comes out of the USB hole."

"That sounds like it's activated? Are you sure it's not activated?"

"I don't know, what does it look like after startup?"

"Ah, I should have boarded the plane with you."

"Yeah, that's a lot easier."

[Why didn't Zod transform Mars? That way we don't have to exterminate humans! 】

Why bother with that? Do you think Zod is that kind of diplomat?

Zod completely despised humans, even some Kryptonian lineages

"Help me save our race and we start over."
"Severing the corrupt blood that brought us to such a field."

Zod and his party have arrived on Earth, and with the Origin Room and the World Engine, they can easily take over the Earth

So in Zod's view there is no reason to leave

[Why did Superman go to the Indian Ocean instead of saving Metropolis? 】

Because he's the only one who can get there in time

"If I don't stop the machines in the Indian Ocean, the gravitational field will continue to expand."

The military can handle the Met's side, at least they think they can

[What is the mechanical tentacle that protects the world engine? 】

"You'll see the world engine unleash its defenses."
"These defense systems are actually the largest liquid metal effects in the film."
"We think it's actually Zach who thinks it's going to be a great defensive tool, not just for showing mechanics."
"We looked at the world engine for a long time and realized that there are several good places to put 3 large pools of liquid metal."
"Zac described all the defensive moves it could do, and it turned into a really cool Superman vs Robot fight in the movie."

[Superman shouldn't ruthlessly destroy all the Kryptonian babies in the origin chamber]

Superman destroyed the ship because he knew his father told him the Kryptonian social system was doomed

"Your mother Lyra and I are just as much a failure of our world as Zod, tied to its destiny."

Genetically Controlled Babies Born in Origin Chambers Designed to Rebuild a Ruined Society

"We're all ghosts, Zod, don't you understand?"
"The Kryptonite you don't want to give up is gone!"

In fact, Superman knew it long before Joe Al told him

The young Clark can be seen reading Plato's "Republic", a book on the philosophy of justice

Plato reasoned that a just society must consist of citizens divided into different classes

Labourers, defenders, and philosophically educated rulers all do pre-assigned work for the good of society

"This is the chamber of origin, where all Kryptonians were bred."
"Every child is born to fulfill a predetermined role in our society."
"Workers, soldiers, leaders, etc."

Krypton, depicted in Man of Steel, is the society Plato envisioned in the Republic

This is the antithesis of free choice and capitalist society that Superman represents, Clark knows it

"It's not false that people on earth are different from us."
"But I ultimately believe it's a good thing."
"They're not necessarily going to make the same mistakes we did."
"As long as you guide me, Carl."

Krypton did have a chance, it failed, and it will fail again

"Krypton had a chance."

Not to mention, with the destruction of the world engine, the planetary transformation is unfinished

The revival of the Kryptonian race on Earth means the birth of a Kryptonian army under the command of Zod

They have superhuman abilities and are genetically engineered to wipe out lower life for the benefit of Krypton.

"Everything I do, no matter how violent or cruel, is for my people."

"I don't think they want to share the world."

I think this could be considered a legitimate self-defense killing—

If there is a fetus in the chamber of origin, not an empty egg waiting for the Codex to imprint the DNA and begin the pregnancy process

But there's no fetus in there, Superman's cells store all the DNA, so those egg sacs are empty

[Superman took many years to master the ability, how can Zod master it so easily? 】

Did it really take Superman years to master his abilities?

He got his X-ray vision under control in 30 seconds with the help of his mother

His super strength and invulnerability are innate so no need to practice

In emergencies, he will use his hot eyes

After he jumped very high a few times + believed he learned to fly

I guess he ended up spending years mastering all the abilities we see in the movies

But that's just a 2-minute fragment of his life

Zod has the advantage of being genetically edited and trained to control his senses

"I was bred to be a warrior, Carl, and spent my life training to control my senses."

And the advantage of seeing how Superman uses his abilities

really nothing unreasonable

[Superman didn't save anyone in this movie]

I don't know which version of the movie you are watching

But in the version I'm watching, he saves a bunch of people on an oil rig that's about to explode

child in a school bus

a fighter pilot

A soldier who fell from a helicopter

A soldier who must lose in a sword battle

Louise being attacked by a robot

Louise falling to Earth in a damaged escape pod

Louise dropped from C-17

And a bunch of fools who don't know how to avoid Zod's hot eyes

and the whole earth

[Why doesn't Superman lead the fight away from populated places? He puts people in danger for no reason! 】

During the town fight you can see him several times trying to fly the enemy out of town

but they pulled him back

He managed to pick one up once and he had seconds to decide where to throw the guy

The nearest open space is far away, and behind him there is a girl who is fighting the army

Zod's men are attacking indiscriminately, not just Superman

He has to be around to make sure they don't hurt anyone

Zod has two goals in Met 1

Get revenge on Superman by punching and kicking, get revenge on Superman by killing all humans

Zod may have his eye on Superman in battle, but his ultimate goal is to make Superman suffer the same loss as him

"I'm going to make them miserable, Carl."
"The human beings you saved, I will take them from you one by one."

This means Superman should stay close to some of the people protecting Metropolis

If he tries to steer the fight away from the Metropolis, Zod will fight back

Just as Superman hit the sky and was hit by Zod immediately

The last episode is the most criticized

People blame Superman for ruining Metropolis

Blame Superman for ruining Metropolis

Blame Superman for deliberately killing thousands of people

There's even a bullshit BuzzFeed infographic estimate

Think Superman's fight with Zod cost $2 trillion

Someone should tell whoever made these criticisms

99% of the destruction was caused by black zero while Superman was on the other side of the planet

Then Superman came to fight Zod

*These destructions occurred before the final battle

"I know there are some people who marvel at how much damage was done, but our view is that there will be so much damage."
"We're not telling the story of the wizarding world, where the building collapsed and no one was hurt."
"What we want to say is what would happen if these things happened."
"We want to move things forward rationally, it's not out of touch with reality."

Like we said, there's no way to take the fight away from the Metropolis

So let's see what Superman does in this situation and figure out how much damage he's actually responsible for

He accidentally destroyed three buildings when he destroyed the scout ship, these buildings were very close to the world engine, and the exterior burned out

So it can be said that there is no one in there

Then Zod Sabotage, Zod Sabotage, Zod Sabotage, Zod Sabotage

Or Zod

Then Zod kicks the tanker, which Superman could have caught

But he dodged and blew up a parking lot

Then you can see him looking back and like to say

Oh, maybe shouldn't run away

But that's just the parking lot, it's supposed to be empty, who's okay to stroll around in the parking lot?

Then this is the fault of the two

Empty construction sites too

Zod destroys, then Zod slams him into the window

Superman fights back against Zod and drags him through these windows

Zod destroy this this this and this

Zod destroys Wayne Enterprises satellite

And then Superman screwed up this window and balcony

If you think several empty buildings, a parking lot, a building outer

A construction site, a row of windows and a balcony

Unforgivable destruction for Superman

Maybe you haven't seen Superman doing good things anywhere else

So basically Superman put on the cape for 20 minutes and Zod destroyed most of the rest of the city

Superman has been doing his best

But there is absolutely no reason to hold him responsible for the destruction of the Met and thousands of deaths

Anyway, you should blame his inexperience because this is Superman's first day on the job

He just put on the cape

I know you don't like that reason, but it's true

"In this case, the super-talent is on the job for about a week."
"He's not a superman like Neal Adams in DC Comics."
"He lives in a world that doesn't even know Superman exists."
"He just flew for the first time the other day."
"He's never fought someone with superpowers."
"So he's not just facing a guy with super powers."
"Still someone who has spent his life training how to use superpowers."
"A person who exists as a super killing machine, and said that he will not stop until he kills all human beings."

This involves one of the most controversial scenes in comic book history.

[Superman shouldn't kill Zod, Superman doesn't kill! 】

There are records everywhere on the Internet that Superman has killed people in the past

But don't know why people think it's so easy for Superman to kill Zod here, like he wants to.

"do not do that!"
"Okay, let's go."

Quite the contrary, Superman has no choice but to kill Zod

Otherwise, Zod will kill those idiots

Afterwards he cried out in remorse, because he not only wanted to kill, but to kill the last surviving member of his own kind

"The emotion pouring out of the shouting was so shocking that the entire crew was stunned as they filmed."

"By the way I think that affects Superman."
"It was a difficult decision for him, it was no small thing and you could see that he was deeply affected."
"right."
"Maybe we can see how this affects him in the next movie."

[Why doesn't Superman cover Zod's eyes with his hands? 】

Heat Sight Can Hurt Kryptonians Too

In addition, the point of this scene is to let Superman kill Zod.

[Why didn't Superman fly up and take Zod away? 】

Where to take? he's been doing it

no success at all

If Superman stops Zod from killing this group of people, he has to stop him from killing another group of people

another group of people, another group of people

Because Zod said

"I'm going to make them miserable, Carl."
"The human beings you saved, I will take them from you one by one."

He will never stop

"no way!"

And that's not the point of the scene

There's no other way to stop Zod, that's how the story was written

"In this case, you can see the way Chris and I work and do what's best for the story."
"It's completely different from what fans think you should do with the characters, you have to focus on the story."
"We don't do things according to the fans' likes and dislikes, we have to follow the facts of the story."
"Thematically, this is a story about the last survivor of the race."
"He got a chance to revive his race, but that meant he had to choose."
"If you take out Superman, what's the right way to tell the story?"
"I think the right way to tell a story is to say to a powerful alien that you can revive your own race..."
"But you're going to exterminate the race that adopted you."
"This horrific moral dilemma is actually being forced to kill the only survivor of my own family other than myself."
"Make a choice."
"Take Superman out, I think that's the right way to tell a story."

"But this Superman movie! You can't take Superman out!"

"It's against the character of Superman to write stories like this because he has a no-kill rule!"

are you saying that?

We can respond with the words of director Zach Snyder

"David and I, Chris and I talked about it for a long time."
"I really think we should kill Zod."
"My reasoning was that I wanted to tell a real origin story."
"His aversion to killing was unexplained and etched in his DNA."

he's right

Superman's aversion to killing was never really explained

Man of Steel takes a deep dive into the philosophy of superheroes

There is no rational reason even in the manga not to kill the norm

There are indeed inferences, ideas

But the best explanation we can find without looking at millions of Superman comics is

Because he is stronger than everyone else, he can choose not to kill in most critical situations

So he set a higher standard for himself

But this inference does not include value judgments

This reasoning is based on the premise that killing is wrong no matter the circumstances

Why is murder inferior to no murder?

Why does Superman treat the lives of heroes and murderers equally?

We're not trying to argue, we're just asking what is the philosophical basis for Superman's no-kill rule?

Killing is said to reduce heroes to the level of criminals

But this is not a sufficient reason, as it equates behavior and motivation

In this case, it depends on the situation

Criminals kill for personal gain...

Not the same as how reasonable it is for the hero to kill the criminal to save the victim

Many people, including Batman, think that once you kill a villain, you can't stop

"If you're going to kill one criminal, why not kill all criminals?"

seriously? Landslide effect?

Is there no situation in the superhero world? Everything is absolute?

The answer is that if there is no other way, he should kill those who threaten innocent lives

or someone who is as strong as him or stronger than him

Like he killed Doomsday and Mr. Troubleshooter and others like that

And he shouldn't be exposing himself to kryptonite in shame afterwards

Just because he thinks killing people means he doesn't deserve power

[Murdering destroys Superman's character, if he uses his abilities to kill, he doesn't deserve these abilities]

What about the people he can save in the future?

What if the next super villain that humans can't kill threatens Earth?

This kind of thing happens so often, does Superman expect humans to protect themselves?

I thought he valued human life and vowed to protect human beings as much as possible

Even after he was forced to kill

This is equivalent to saying either Superman saves everyone or Superman saves no one

This... is too absurd

"Oh, but he does have a different standard."

It's because you don't have basic ethics

"He won't let his distaste for killing affect life on the entire planet."
"Even small children, that family."
"If he says, 'I am morally against killing people, so I think I have to let him kill those people'."
"That's the dilemma."

No matter how plausible you think Superman's no-kill rule is

The film challenges that thinking when it forces Superman to kill Zod

In Man of Steel, Superman's code hasn't been established

This movie is testing Superman's moral code by not giving him options

It gives him a starting point and a reason for his code

Not as random as in the comics

but based on real experiences and values

The filmmakers are from a real-world perspective, under the film's theme of choice

Get rid of the limitations of Superman's own setting and fan circle, and rebuild Superman's character

"For me, you can look at it the other way around, why do people always focus on this?"
"It's like reassuring myself that Superman won't..."
"I mean it's not like something that doesn't exist in the real world."
"No, that's a real-world problem."

"My point is that he didn't become Superman until the penultimate scene of the movie."
"He doesn't know what he... people don't think Superman is supposed to do."
"There are no guidelines in this story yet."
"We're trying to write a relatively realistic story about what would happen if Superman existed."

"But it's not the real world!"

"This is a world with a protagonist against the sky and an unchanging ideal! A world where advertising cannot be placed!"

At the end of the day, those who disapprove of killing Zod just don't want to see a story where Superman has to decide to kill

They want the story to be superhuman and always find another way, a way not to face the moral dilemma

Because they think that's the character of the character

[Superman should not be written as having to kill, Superman should always find other ways]

In other words, I don't want Superman to be morally tested

Ironically, the only way to explore a character's morality is to test him

The situation that the character encounters does not reflect the character of the character, the way the character responds to this situation can

If you make up a way for Superman, he'll choose that way because that's his character

If you don't give Superman a way out, it will be deeper

You want to explore what this character will do, how to deal with difficult situations

Anyway, what other options are there?

Send Zod back to the Phantom Zone?

According to Superman's confession, it's better to die in the Phantom Zone

The Phantom Zone is an endless prison with no concept of time, almost eternal torture

"You dare not kill us! You dare not get your hands dirty! Lock us in a black hole forever!"

This is by no means better than the death penalty, even if life imprisonment is about a hundred years

By comparison Superman killed Zod being merciful

It's often said that Superman kills his enemies as an injustice to play judge, jury, and executioner

But if he sends someone into the phantom zone, he still plays the judge and the jury

He is still the one who makes decisions above the law

Is it only when execution is involved that someone jumps out against it?

This dude is judging others to suffer endlessly without authorization.

Those who think Superman should be immune to moral dilemmas unwittingly justify the movie's message

They found out there was Superman or someone was making a Superman movie

They just imposed all these rules and expectations on the character and the story

"The filmmakers had no choice, they had to recreate my preconceived notions of Superman without hesitation..."

"And what I allow him to do, or I'll boycott him!"

This is exactly what Jonathan Kent is afraid of

So we respond to these criticisms

Hopefully we've given you a reason to rewatch this movie and give it another chance

Maybe we made you understand the next time you see something in a movie that you don't immediately understand

Instead of berating it sucks, you can take a closer look, do some research, try to understand and be pleasantly surprised

If you still can't give it a name, then you can go to the bottom of the video to spray people

Man of Steel quotes

  • General Zod: Your son, Lara, where have you sent him?

Lara Lor-Van: His name is Kal, son of El. And he is forever beyond your reach.

  • Father Leone: What's on your mind?

Clark Kent: I don't know where to start.

    Father Leone: Wherever you want.

Clark Kent: That ship that appeared last night, I'm the one they're looking for.

Father Leone: [swallows nervously] Do you know... why they want you?

Clark Kent: No, but this General Zod... even if I surrender, there's no guarantee he'll keep his word. But if there's a chance I can save Earth by turning myself in, shouldn't I take it?

Father Leone: What does your gut tell you?

Clark Kent: Zod can't be trusted. The problem is, I'm not sure the people of Earth can be either.

    [walks away]

Father Leone: Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith first. The trust part comes later.
