The Color of Sin - A Short Comment on the Use of Color in Sin City

Watching the film "Sin City" at home on Saturday, the violence, carnage, and pornography in the film is refreshing. The use of color in the film is very unique. There are only 5 colors in the whole film: black, white, red, yellow and green. The whole film is mainly black and white, with red embellishing it, yellow representing an evil person, and green flashing by but unforgettable.

Black: Black is the main theme of the film, representing sin. The entire Sin City is a black heart, black line, black hand, and black screen.

White: White is the accomplice and result of black. The pale sky, the white brains and the blood, and the snow-white cross-tape all portend despair and tragedy.

Red: Thanks to the director for not making red the color of blood. Red has become the only sign of warmth in this film. Red evening dress, red lip gloss, red bed cover, red is the only not-so-evil color in the film. But red generally connotes bloodshed, danger or violence, and the warmth it imparts in the film is itself a sinful irony.

Huang: Yellow is an alternative color that appears in the film, which made me think for a long time. Why did the director arrange for a perverted criminal with a pedophile to turn yellow all over his body, his eyes are yellow, his ears are yellow, his teeth and tongue are yellow, his whole body is yellow from top to bottom, even his blood is yellow, and he is That unnatural bright yellow. And according to the character Hartigan in the photo: the yellow guy not only looks weird, but also emits a stench, like the smell of broken meat and rotten food, like the smell of summer corpses in garbage bags smell. According to my understanding when watching the film, this bright yellow is not used much in reality, and it is more often the color of stool, which is mutually confirmed with Hartigan's statement. After the film, I checked the English dictionary again and found that yellow also means cowardly, cowardly, and despicable in English, such as a yellow dog: despicable person, despicable person, a yellow livered: coward and so on. This coincides with the character of the characters in the film. In addition, this bright yellow is used on the fake eyeballs of the corrupted police sheriff.

Green: This flashes at the beginning of the film. If you don't pay attention, it's easy to ignore. It's very interesting. The scene takes place on the slain subject of a handsome killer. Killers offer cigarettes to their victims before killing them. This time, the object is a beautiful woman, still in red evening dress and red lip gloss. When she helped her light a cigarette, the flame of the lighter ignited, the beauty's pupils turned green, the flame went out, and the green turned black. A few seconds later, gunshots rang out, and the beauty fell into the killer's arms. Green, the sign of hope, the hope that has just been ignited, disillusioned in a few seconds. In this city of sin, hope is temporary, but sin is eternal.

At the end of the movie, the blood-red inscription of Sin City flickered in my mind. The director used the almost primitive brutal tone to tell us that one by one blurred, murderous and frenetic events are happening in our, perhaps the real world.
