The destinated destiny is destinated to be a destiny.

Joel and Clem, a couple, had been together for two years but eventually broke up. They couldn't bear the pain, so they both participated in Doctor Howard's part of the memory erasure project.
Joel is melancholy, introverted, intellectual, slightly autistic; Clem is sunny, outgoing, simple, and a little impetuous (using Joel's last frank words: not educated)
2 years later, Clem was fed up with Joel's boredom and occlusion, and Joel is also fed up with Clem's vulgarity and impetuousness (perhaps it's just what Joel thinks of Clem rather than Clem's self-perceived Clem), in short, communication break down.
The plot is very simple. It has always been based on Joel's acceptance of erasure in a dream. Even if it is simple, there are some bridges that can make you smash the heads of all Chinese directors.
The film is based on sci-fi techniques, but it is not to highlight the greatness of science and technology, although perhaps the day when human beings always fantasize about controlling the neurons in their own brains, and pretty close.
Through the many activities of Joel's brain, such as dreams/subconsciousness/sexual fantasies/childhood trauma and other well-known psychological phenomena, we analyze the most primitive and most sincere and worthy of human beings: love, which is generally lacking in our society.

I feel that in the process of erasing love memory, Joel's subconscious is so resistant to its execution, which also supports the whole film's plot, allowing us to experience the common but ubiquitous romantic love of the hero and heroine together.
But this love is going to end after all, 2 years - it is the time when even unforgettable love will become dull, or maybe it is the deep-rooted mismatch between the two, which led to their rupture, and even tried to erase the memory of love one after another.
The process of erasing memories is too painful, which is inhumane, especially for love, and not to mention Joel's entire struggle during the erasure process. After the super-long prologue of the 17-minute film, the crying eyes at the beginning of the film are enough to explain.

I know that there are many people in this world who have been hurt for love, especially how the injured woman hopes to erase the past.
This romantic film fully expresses the desperate retrospect and cherishment of human beings for love memory. If you are reading this article, why not just close your eyes and think of who he was and who he is now--the old man.
I always hear, "I wish I hadn't met him", "I wish I didn't get to know him very much in those years", "I really want to forget all this absurdity".
But it's too hard to forget and too beautiful to remember - even if it hurts, as long as it's true.

The male and female protagonists overcome the oblivion after high-tech excision, and finally come together miraculously and meet again and fall in love like first love, but the director did not arrange a happy ending.
Final dialogue:
Joel: I can't see anything I don't like about you.
Clementine: But you will, you will think of things and I'll get bored with you and feel trapped because that's what happens with me.
Joel : Ok.
It is quite philosophical, no matter how you start to separate, it will inevitably lead to separation.
I like this ending and fully recognize it. I have always believed that separation is inevitable, if necessary. The destinated destiny is destinated to be a destiny.

What surprised me even more was a sideline:
the romance between Dr. Howard and his female assistant Mary.
The beautiful blonde girl Mary is a receptionist in Howard's office with a family of at least 50. On the chaotic night of erasing Joel's memory, she first made peace with Stan-Howard's apprentice who presided over Joel's memory erasure process, which is obviously not the first time. .
And Howard came from home in the middle of the night after Stan couldn't solve the problem, but had another chance to be alone with Mary (Stan left for an excuse), Mary actually kissed Howard, expressing how fancy she has always been to Howard.
Howard's wife, who was always suspicious of Howard, was arrested overnight. Mary explained that it was just a crush, they were nothing, and Howard's wife said resentfully: You can have him. You did. The
truth is revealed , It turns out that Mary and Howard had a relationship, which was fermented by the eternal fantasy of the beautiful little assistant to the mature and stable male boss.
For family stability or other reasons, they had reached a consensus that Howard would erase this memory of Mary.
Doctors don't heal themselves, they don't heal themselves, but they heal their own women, sigh, it involves ethics, even if Mary is willing (really willing?).

There are more other branch lines and invisible explicit plots in the film that discuss real love and marriage. I won't go into details here, just watch the movie for yourself.
This is an important reason for the popularity of the film. It is a very realistic representation of the details of love that happened around you and me, romantic, and traumatic.
All Chinese directors have really eaten shit. Such an impetuous society with sub-health, no spiritual pursuits and frequent mental illnesses needs films that fit the real lives of contemporary men and women. I believe that there are countless scenes that are deeper than this film. Staged in China.
Forget it, we can't blame the director entirely, because of ideological issues, ZF forced the director to shoot more and more old times.
Isn't "Dwelling" under high pressure?

Jim Carrey's performance is impeccable, and he has successfully transformed from the king of comedy to the melancholy autistic young man.

The two quotes in the film also touched me:

"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot

The world forgetting, by the world forgot

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

Each prayer accepted and each wish resigned."

"How happy are those who are pure and spotless The world forgets those who

forget the world

The sun in the spotless mind is eternally shining

Every petition is accepted, every wish is fulfilled"

---------------- Alexander Pope

"Blessed are the forgetful: for they get the better even of their blunders."
- - Friedrich Nietzsche

is also obsessed with the dreamy beauty of the snowy Montauk Beach in the film, I have never imagined snowy beach, I know I must experience it once in my lifetime.

  • Joel: Mierzwiak! Please let me keep this memory, just this one.

  • Clementine: Sometimes I don't think people realize how lonely it is to be a kid. Like... you don't matter.
