The first time I saw it, it was a bit confusing, but I just understood the main idea and what I wanted to express:
this movie is a bit sci-fi - there are companies that can do surgery to erase someone's memory, but in fact it is talking about love and even life. . When the relationship is at a low point, you will want to make a clean break with the other person, and even think: If only you could erase your memory about the other person. But does erasing memory really work? Have you ever thought of those good memories? Won't you regret it when you really want to erase all your memories? Or won't you fall in love with him again when you erase it? ——Because you are still you, and he is still the one who will attract you.
The second time I watched it, it didn't feel confusing. Watching this movie, as long as you understand the sequence and perspective of its story, it will be easy to understand. Its sequence is
1. On February 14th, after the hero and heroine Joel and Clementine both erased their memories of each other, the two came to Montauk Beach together and had a very speculative talk. Went to the Charles ice for an all-nighter the next night.
In the morning (February 16th), Joel was in the car waiting for Clem to come home to get his toothbrush, when it suddenly changed to the scene where he was choking in the car at night, and the singing sounded. This actually skipped to the night of February 13th, the night Joel had his memory erasure surgery.
2. Most of the movie is the process of erasing memory, on the evening of February 13th (that is, the early morning of the 14th). At this point, it's important to understand that the perspective is mainly in Joel's head. So, some are his memories of the past two years, some are what he thought when he erased his memories that night, and some were his imagination, and some were what he heard from the people who erased his memories. At the same time, the secondary perspective is the experience of the memory-erasing staff that night.
Note that since it's mostly what's in Joel's head, it's possible to have both past memories and present thoughts at the same time. It's just like when we are cranky, isn't it the same, different times and things are mixed together. And memories can also be changed, so Joel wanted to mix things up with Clem when she was a child, hoping to preserve her memories.
3. Use the same shot of Joel waiting for Clem in the car to connect to part 1. and tell the story after that. - The two of them received separate recordings of their memory erasing company and heard their complaints to each other before erasing their memories. Boys think girls are too shallow, girls think boys are too boring. So, do you want to start over? Will it end in the same way? The ending is an open ending, not sure. But I believe they still decided to give this relationship another chance. Because they said - Okay...Yeah, even if you know the ending is bad, what if the two of you speculate, just enjoy the moment. What's more, if you change your perspective, your view will be very different. Through these twists and turns, they have also learned a lot, and the ending is not necessarily the same. Like the theme song (Everybody's got to learn sometime):
Change your heart, look around you
Change your heart, it will astound you Now I
need your loving like the sunshine
And everybody's gotta learn sometime
, look around; change your mind and you'll feel refreshed. I need you to love me like sunshine. One has to learn something sometimes.
Well, I'm almost done, and I want to talk about two famous quotes from the movie.
One is from Nietzsche:
"Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders
.
"
what does it mean? Does it mean that being good at forgetting is a virtue, I don't think so. In my understanding, it is a bit similar to ignorance is bliss, or in other words, the ignorant is fearless.
The other is Alexander Pope's:
"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.
Each prayer accepted and each wish resigned"
I will also try to translate it:
The Pure Nun What a joy.
Forget the world, and be forgotten by the world.
The flawless mind is bathed in eternal sunshine.
God will accept your every prayer and obey your every desire.
The meaning is similar, the spotless mind is the bliss.
My understanding: Although these two sentences are important, they are not the message that the director must convey. What the director wants us to think about is: Are these two sentences the truth? If you have two choices: one is the memory erased, seemingly happy and nothing; the other is the complex memory of love and hate, which one do you choose? Will you really choose to erase your memory resolutely? So what about the good part of the memory? What about love and feeling?
I love that this movie makes me think accordingly. I don't know if you've ever been very angry with your lover. I don't know if you've ever thought about it - it would be great without him. Or, if only I could erase all my memories of him. But think about the kindness that person treats you and the happiness they give you. The mood may suddenly brighten.
Finally, let's talk about the actors. I like Jim Carrey very much. I watched a lot of his comedies when I was a kid, but I think he is actually a very sensitive person. In this movie, he acted very well and played the character's character: a little introverted, conservative, sensitive, and nice. .
Kate Winslet also does a great job. Played a lively, cheerful, a little offbeat, simple, impulsive woman. She is my favorite actress. I have played a lot of characters with different personalities, what they are like. Watching her in this movie, it's hard to relate to Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Titanic, and Sense and Sensibility. By the way, I also recommend several of the movies mentioned above.
