A Little Thought about "The Usual Suspects"

When I watched it for the first time, I was relieved to see the whole thing at the end, and the situation became clear gradually. The reversal of the last three minutes made me rewatch it at double speed, looking for some foreshadowing and reviewing the plot.

The film has a total of two lines, the main line is the subjective narrative of the cripple; the other is the objective line based on the information obtained from the narrative of the burned patients in the hospital.

The solid gold lighter, gold watch, and pack of cigarettes at the beginning and end hold the truth. What the police wanted to solve was the case of the ship being burned yesterday. The beginning was the truth of the case. A man with a gun in his left hand and a cigarette in his left hand killed Keaton. The correspondence is too perfect. Including the fact that when David interrogated the cripple, the cripple couldn't punch the lighter with his right hand, all of which were hints of the truth.

The cripple made up stories in the police station, and the burn patients clarified the truth in the hospital. Two things happened at the same time. David used the information from the hospital to press the lame man to get the ending he wanted. And the cripple, following David's words, played the cowardly role and took charge of the conversation. In the end, the cripple won the time difference and left the police station without revealing any flaws before faxing the picture.

The plot became very clear when I watched it for the second time, but it was more interesting when I watched the ending for the first time, and I could feel the brilliance of this film.

Kint's "fucking cops", which he sings with tears, is really impressive.

The Usual Suspects quotes

  • Kobayashi: Before you... do me in, Mr. McManus, you will let me finish my business with Ms. Finneran first, won't you?

    Keaton: What did you say?

Kobayashi: Edie Finneran. She's upstairs in my office for an extradition deposition. I requested that she be put on the case personally. She flew in yesterday. No matter. Kill away, Mr. McManus.

  • Verbal: He lets the last Hungarian go. He waits until his wife and kids are in the ground and then he goes after the rest of the mob. He kills their kids, he kills their wives, he kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they live in and the stores they work in, he kills people that owe them money. And like that he was gone. Underground. Nobody has ever seen him since. He becomes a myth, a spook story that criminals tell their kids at night. "Rat on your pop, and Keyser Soze will get you." And no-one ever really believes.
