An animation that succeeds and fails

2009.6.21 18:30 "Robot Wally" in the first hall of Shanghai Daguang Cinema Attendance rate: 100% Personal evaluation: 8 points

The last film selected during the 9-day screening at the Shanghai Film Festival. The high rating for it made me wait a long time for the big screen.

The movie opened 5 minutes earlier than expected, and was warmed up with an animated short about magicians and rabbits. Later, when the feature film started, the little kids in the back row started to riot, one question after another. But in the face of an excellent Pixar cartoon, such a scene seems cute and appropriate.

Personally, I give Wally 8 points. The quality of the whole movie is indeed very high. According to the professional eyes of friends, the music is also very good. The image of the robot can move people very much, and the feelings between them are not inferior to the sincerity of real people. The 2-point deduction is meaningful, or, in my opinion, the values that Pixar spends a lot of money trying to demonstrate is actually pale. As a cartoon, "Wall-E" is undoubtedly a successful box office winner and critics dark horse. But as a film, its fate is undoubtedly the opposite of its original intention.

I think, after watching the movie, not many people will mention its big scene set on a nearly devastated Earth. Maybe the children will think the fat ladies and gentlemen on the "Axiom" are funny, maybe the couples will be moved by Wally's persistent pursuit of Eve, maybe more people will pay attention to the warm and funny details: such as the one that cannot be classified fork, like the lighter that sparked love. But who will reflect after the movie is over, what is it really trying to tell us? Most people ignore that plant. Yes, it is the main line of the animation, or the protagonist. Valli and Eve are just the product of the disillusionment of a mechanical age, and their "feelings" have taken over.

All right. "Robot Wally" is an eco-friendly animation about a bleak and terrifying future for humanity. However, no matter how high the quality of Pixar's animation is, it has always followed the path of tenderness and cannot evoke a trace of fear in the audience. And people without fear cannot have the courage and awareness to face reality. This is the soft underbelly of animation. It has never been able to make people even a little bit afraid like science fiction, thriller, and disaster films. For example, "The Day After Tomorrow", which was very popular a few years ago, made people feel a little chill after watching it.

Talking about the power of movies is a dark and dark place to start a discussion. Here, I don't mean to belittle "Robot Wally". After the movie was over, I sat watching the full cast and applauded it. It's a good cartoon, but not "educational" (by Chinese standards). Because it is too perfect for the details, so perfect that people ignore the big picture. We saw a new type of hedonic society in outer space, a period of you and me among robots, so we forgot about the earth and the environment we were in, and forgot that maybe in the future, only Xiaoqiang can stubbornly survive in the garbage heap.

Yes, after watching "Wally", we are moved, and then forget about the robot and see the movie as a successful stress relief or entertainment. Children love it, young people love it, and maybe the old people will watch it happily, because it is so easy to shoot, so calm, like any blockbuster, it cannot touch the depths of the soul.
