The underworld turns out not so cool

Honestly, this film brought me back from the hazy freshness of gangster films back to harsh reality. The underworld isn't cool at all. Many people join the underworld not because they are forced by life, but want to live a life of idleness. The underworld has no sense of loyalty. Jimmy robbed Hansa of money not only unwilling to share it with everyone, but also silenced all his accomplices. People in the underworld are vulgar, and if they disagree, they will kill others. People in the underworld don't trust anyone, and if their interests are violated, even their relatives are not spared. And the underworld is always associated with drug trafficking, weapons trafficking, prostitution, etc. It is completely the world of the devil.

It's not that Henry is so noble, he's just a little jerk who can't even take the place of Jimmy or Tommy, so he can only do something petty. Of course he has a conscience compared to Jimmy and Tommy. The final report of the accomplice is also out of self-protection. The requirement to join an Italian gangster is that they must be 100% Italian. Thinking of the Shenzhen Association, it seems that they have more trust and loyalty.

The male lead is somehow not popular, but the supporting role, Roberto Dinero, is. Since then, the latter has joined the gangster film club.

Some people say that this film is not comparable to the godfather, and is not worthy of being called the most classic three gangster films. I don't think it's necessary to rank top 3. The greatest value of this film is its perspective, which is based on a true story and tells you a real world.

I found the similarities between Scorsese and Wes Anderson: strong narration is needed, pleasure comes from restlessness and impatience; fear of images leads to anti-falseness, boundary situations are pulled back to daily life, and "truth" is prompted in unexpected ways, but Has been absorbed before being discovered.

Goodfellas quotes

  • Henry Hill: [narrating] All they got from Paulie was protection from other guys looking to rip them off. That's what it's all about. That's what the FBI can never understand - that what Paulie and the organization offer is protection for the kinds of guys who can't go to the cops. They're like the police department for wiseguys.

  • Henry Hill: [narrating] Paulie may have moved slow, but it was only because Paulie didn't have to move for anybody.
