a computer with only memory

The director cuts the plot into pieces and then flashes back not to simply match the title of the film, but this way of narration is the best viewing point to appreciate the film. Did you doubt Teddy's motives at first? Do you think Natalie is reliable? Are you as convinced of text and photo fragments as Lenny is? Have you seen Don't believe his lies after Teddy's photo and have the same confident smirk as Lenny? When earlier and more plots are revealed, intertwined with the original plot, the audience as an outsider gradually wakes up. The trigger of the fork was pulled, sending the audience who were driving on the same track as Lenny in the direction of the truth, watching Lenny go further and further.

Lenny is like a computer with no hard disk but only memory. When the power is cut off, everything is cleared.

It turns out that deconstruction is to repeat a simple thing until you don't understand it, and then give you the feeling of sudden realization. . . The test is the ability of post-editing.

The whole story is divided into twenty-six fragments, the last thirteen fragments are flashbacks, and the first thirteen fragments are shot in color film, and the first thirteen positive narratives are added to the thirteen color plots and turned into black and white films to highlight the style of the documentary. Each of the last thirteen fragments is divided into two halves, and the order is reversed. The black and white fragments sometimes come before the two halves, sometimes in the middle, and sometimes after.

Memento quotes

  • Leonard Shelby: When I looked into his eyes I thought I saw recognition. Now I know. You fake it. If you think you're supposed to recognize somebody you, you just pretend. You bluff it to get a pat on the head from the doctors. You bluff it to seem less like a freak.

  • Teddy: So you lie to yourself to be happy. There's nothing wrong with that. We all do it.
