It is actually quite easy to make a moral dilemma. Common problems include "both a and b fell into the water, neither of them know how to swim, they are all very important people to you, they may be relatives, they may be friends of life and death, they may be lovers, who do you want to save first? One?", "You and your friends are going on an adventure, trapped in a cave, and severely lacking food. Your friend suggested that one of you kill yourself and the other eat his flesh. It's better than both of them. Would you accept that?" , "The father is hidden for the son, and the son is hidden for the father, is it correct?"
These problems may or may not be encountered by everyone. Throughout this film, Batman is constantly confronted with these kinds of questions: Should Batman break the accustomed order in society, create chaos, and finally create chaos, should he give up? Save your comrade first or your lover? Does truth or hope matter?
There are people who oppose a rude hero like Batman. In the movie, there is a character who is compared to Batman - the chief prosecutor, Harvey Dent, known as the "white knight". The image of the "white knight" represents people's ideal public servants -- upright, fearless, and in pursuit of justice, fame, fortune, life and death are all put aside. He's not like Batman, he's "in the system." If we imagine that many people, like "Batman", want to use their abilities to maintain justice at the expense of undermining the rule of law, this society must be in chaos. But if everyone is like a "white knight", the society is stable. (Of course, Dent, the real person of "White Knight", is a double-faced person, but the focus of this paragraph is on the image of "White Knight", not Dent's character.)
Another Batman character in the movie is the Joker. They all represent a radical attitude - the social system is not enough to maintain the order of the world. For this absurd reality, Batman gave birth to love-he wants to protect not only the people he likes, but also all citizens; the Joker gave birth to hate-he wants to see society plunge into chaos. The Joker is a severely mentally disturbed person who is completely desperate for the world and does not believe in the relationship between people. He disregards all morals, and his life seems to be only for excitement, like a desperate martial arts master. (By the way, this movie reminds me of No Country for Old Men, where the killer is also very Joker-like, and on the other hand, like Dent, likes to throw silver to decide his fate.) Batman wants to satisfy himself sense of justice, regardless of legal boundaries. The Joker has no hope in life; Batman shoulders the hopes of countless people, but he can't find anyone to take his place. Batman and Dent are both desperate: "Either die for justice, or live until you become a bad guy". As the Joker puts it, they're all the same: they don't play well, they're seen as freaks, and they're isolated.
In fact, the three characters of Batman, Joker, and Dent all know how vulnerable ordinary people are. Batman and the Joker both transcend general morality and law, and can also be regarded as "Superman" in Nietzsche's theory. Dent's style doesn't appeal to the other two, because Batman and the Joker have always believed in their principles and are very tough, while Dent is like a failed idealist. So, in comparison, Dent is just an ordinary person, a fragile person.
This is the difference between the average man and the "superman": the average man needs the comfort of the soul, just as the child needs the adult lie. They need "hope," and images like Batman and the White Knight are their source of hope. Because they deliver justice and satisfy the ideals of the people. When there are bad guys, there must be heroes. Heroes can make the world a better place, and people don't have to worry anymore. Heroes have power, and Batman's power comes from violence and technology, and prosecutors have his political power.
What happens when ordinary people lose hope? That's what the clown said, falling into a state of chaotic madness. What will be the loss of hope? It's time to lose order. People panic when they find out that there are people like clowns who can take people's lives lightly. They found Batman incapable of stopping bad guys from running rampant, irrational, and asked him to take off his mask. Dent found himself unable to protect the people who mattered most to him, and completely abandoned his morals. So Batman finally said: People want hope, not truth. This may also be the reason why he has been reluctant to take off his mask.
