Sam's classic line

F: I can't do this, Sam

S: I know. It's all wrong. By rights, we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great story, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow . Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think , Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in these stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something.

F: What are we holding on to, Sam?

S: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for.

Frodo: I can't do it, Sam.

Sam: I know, it's just a mistake. Actually we shouldn't even get here. But we did it. It's like in the old legends, in the really great ones, there's darkness and danger. Sometimes you don't even want to know the ending, because (you will think) how can the ending be happy? How can this world ever recover after so many bad things have happened? But in the end, the shadow will pass, even the darkness will pass. A new day will always come, and when the sun rises on a new day, it will shine even more than ever. Even if you're too young to understand why, these stories in your heart always mean something. I think I understand now. The people in those great stories had plenty of opportunities to look back, but they didn't. They go forward because they have faith.

Frodo: What are our beliefs?

Sam: That is there are some beautiful things in this world that are worth fighting for.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers quotes

  • [Aragorn walks through the ranks of Elven defenders of Helm's Deep]

Aragorn: [In Elvish] Show them no mercy... for you shall receive none!

  • Gimli: It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.

Aragorn: [whispering to Eowyn] It's the beards.

Gimli: And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no Dwarf-women, and that Dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!

    [Eowyn laughs]

Gimli: Which is, of course, ridiculous.
