A Catholic Film

While the series draws on a lot of pagan mythology, the overall spirit, Tolkien clearly says, is Catholic. There are many references in the book and film that there is a greater power at work - the power of God. Sauron is a fallen angel (as should Saruman). Gandalf is angelic spirit. The various races in Middle-earth are creatures with free will, and Sauron's purpose is to take away the free will. Victory only makes sense out of freedom, so Gandalf can't interfere with the choices of the various races, and can't help them too much, only those villains who have magic, such as Balrogs and dragons (knowing not dragons). divine intervention can only be done by accident. Therefore, many accidental events that happened along the way were actually the will of God.

A few things have happened these days, unfortunate things, in which people also played a disgraceful role, but it was really accidental. I think this is probably also a divide intervention. As for why, why God did this, it is not something that people can ponder. People should not speculate.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King quotes

  • Pippin: [singing to Denethor as Faramir leads the charge] Home is behind, the world ahead... and there are many paths to tread... Through shadow... To the edge of night... Until the stars are all alight... Mist and shadow, cloud and shade... All shall fade... all... shall... fade.

  • Denethor: My sons are spent. My line has ended. Rohan has deserted us. Theoden's betrayed me. Abandon your posts! Flee, flee for your lives!

[He turns around, and Gandalf knocks him out with his staff]

    Gandalf: Prepare for battle!
