Frankenstein (1931)
7.5
1931 / United States / Science Fiction Horror / James Whale / Colin Cliffe May Clark

Although this version has been adapted a lot, such as victor and henry's identities, Elizabeth's loyalty, and later wishes of "the one", some plots have been deleted, but it feels shorter and more focused on one thing. Compared with the 1994 version, the 31 version has a lot of details that are better than the 94 version, but I still like both versions. Maybe the 94 version has more delicate emotions. Record the 31st edition this time.

The translation here should be "I finally know what it's like to be a God."

The motivation for making "the one" for the 31st edition is not as complicated as the 94th edition. It is purely paranoid about scientific breakthroughs. Frankenstein said "Now i know what it feel like to be god." When the first test was successful, when the reborn man moved his arm, Frankenstein was more candid than Frankenstein in 94, and spoke more frankly. The significance of Frankenstein's accomplishment which was devastating to religion.

It is difficult to say clearly whether "the one" is evil or good at the beginning of its birth. Perhaps "humanity" itself cannot be simply summed up in one word. Even the reborn man based on the brains of heinous criminals did not show violent tendencies at first, and even obeyed orders. He yearned for sunshine and freedom until the assistant held a torch and caused him mental stimulation. "Get him to the wine cellar, he is a monster," the doctor said. But he was just afraid of torches. Seeing here, he really felt miserable, and he was easily given up.

"The one" dialogue with Frankenstein after killing the assistant doctor

"It's murder." This version of Frankenstein really regarded "the one" as a real human, rather than the 94 version as an enemy and a monster. One of the differences between the 31st edition and the 94th edition is that the former is not as strong and obvious as the latter's "father-son bond". It is more like a person who has mastered the right of "God" through science and prolonged the reproductive function. Frankenstein did not completely hate and reject "the one" from beginning to end.

Frankenstein's obvious facial expression changes

On the day of Frankenstein's wedding, his father mentioned the descendants of the "Frankenstein" family when he was toasting. There was a Frankenstein expression. Maybe it wasn't embarrassment, maybe it was the "him" he thought of, and he could become a "descendant" in his heart. So I always feel that this version of Frankenstein's character setting is closer to real people than the 94 version.

"The one" came to the little girl's house first after escaping. The little girl invited him to watch the "boat" by the river. In fact, the flowers were floating on the water. He thought it was amazing and excited. So she turned her head and picked up the little girl and threw it into the water. Seeing this is really shocking and reasonable, distressed and a little black humor. The little girl's family is really innocent and miserable, but "the one" doesn't know it. After he was created, no one taught him anything, as a blank piece of paper in the world. He can perceive both positive and negative emotions but cannot recognize them, let alone the time and opportunity to learn. When he threw the little girl into the water, he thought she would float up the same way, until he, as a creature, perceives the passing of life, and he doesn't even know what salvation is. "That seems to be the result of horror", so be it.

How you treat him, he treats you the same way. This seems to be the way "the one" is handled. Reproduce the behavior of an adult just like a child, because the assistant always abuses him, so he hangs him. Because the little girl is friendly to him, he also treats her unruly, in a way that he understands. But he did not show hostile and violent tendencies, even though he was "born" with a criminal's brain. As the first and only person to accept him, the little girl was drowned by him with a beautiful fantasy, and he finally escaped.

After the bride Elizabeth was frightened by "the one"

Creation and destruction are all determined by the will of the "Creator". The created person has no right to choose.

"The one" struggling to call for help
People set fire to "the one" in the windmill

Finally people found him, lit a torch and forced him to burn to death in a windmill.

Ah ah, it's been a long time and I haven't finished writing it, so let's write it tomorrow

Universal created the first and most recognizable Frankenstein series in history, and it all started in 1931. The film is adapted from the play of the same name, and there are many plot differences with the original novel. When Bella Lugosi, the Count of Vampires, was originally cast, the monster did not have the classic flat-headed mummy shape of Boris Karloff. Because the subject matter involves creation, Universal launched a tug-of-war with the review committee for the release of the film.

    Definitely the audience empathy manipulator.

Frankenstein quotes

  • Dr. Henry Frankenstein: You're quite sure you want to come in?... Very well.

    [Locks door and pockets key]

Dr. Henry Frankenstein: Forgive me, but I'm forced to take unusual precautions.

  • Henry Frankenstein: Dangerous? Poor old Waldman. Have you never wanted to do anything that was dangerous? Where should we be if no one tried to find out what lies beyond? Have you never wanted to look beyond the clouds and the stars, or to know what causes the trees to bud? And what changes the darkness into light? But if you talk like that, people call you crazy. Well, if I could discover just one of these things, what eternity is, for example, I wouldn't care if they did think I was crazy.
