simple and happy life

Ethel and Ernest went from simple love to marriage and children until they were old. They are fortunate to be together through occasional greetings, the positive and optimistic boy and the gentle and kind girl have mutual affection. They are all ordinary people. After they get married, they live in a home that belongs to them alone, making the home more beautiful and warmer bit by bit. Life is getting better and better. Two hard-working people do ordinary work every day, eat, read newspapers, do housework, bicker, ride bicycles together to relax, sunbathe together... Although they are plain but happy. Ernest also often gives his wife some small surprises, adding a little fun to make an already happy life even more icing on the cake. Two simple people have been through a lot, but they are always together. I think they live their lives in such harmony because of the good qualities they have in each other. They will respect, understand, care for each other, accompany each other, and support each other. I also hope to meet such a person and grow old hand in hand.

Ethel & Ernest quotes

  • Ethel Briggs: I could have married a deep-sea diver.

Ernest Briggs: Well, why didn't ya?

Ethel Briggs: Because I didn't love him.

  • [first lines]

Raymond Briggs: [voice over] There was nothing extraordinary about my Mum and Dad, nothing dramatic, no divorce or anything, but they were my parents and I wanted to remember them by doing a picture book. It's a bit odd really, having a book about my parents up there in the best seller list among all the football heroes and cookbooks. They'd be proud of that, I suppose, or rather probably embarrassed too. I'd imagine they'd say, "It wasn't like that," or, "How can you talk about that?" Well, I have, and this is their story.
