family in london

"London Family", a hand-drawn style film, is the story of the parents drawn by the author of the picture book. It's really good to be able to draw, and I've painted my whole life like this. Scene after scene, it seems to have spent a happy life together with them. In the midst of war, in the ordinary, we meet happiness.

"I could have married a diver."

"Really, then why didn't you marry?"

"Because I love you."

There are no ups and downs of the plot, only day after day, ordinary days. Birth, old age, sickness and death, real life, running account records, but the warmth in trivialities is also very moving, ordinary but not ordinary. All in all, because it's us that makes more sense. I know, I konw. Every time I encounter difficulties, someone can say the last sentence I understand, which is always desirable.

The country is going to war. It's okay, our country will win.

The war is still coming. It's okay, don't be afraid, I'm here.

The war is over. Our country will become stronger day by day.

Who says we're old, I'll still give you a green car for romance.

You didn't leave, you see, I'm still preparing your lunch...

When I saw the end, I was only moved.

Ethel & Ernest quotes

  • Ethel Briggs: I could have married a deep-sea diver.

Ernest Briggs: Well, why didn't ya?

Ethel Briggs: Because I didn't love him.

Raymond Briggs: [voice over] There was nothing extraordinary about my Mum and Dad, nothing dramatic, no divorce or anything, but they were my parents and I wanted to remember them by doing a picture book. It's a bit odd really, having a book about my parents up there in the best seller list among all the football heroes and cookbooks. They'd be proud of that, I suppose, or rather probably embarrassed too. I'd imagine they'd say, "It wasn't like that," or, "How can you talk about that?" Well, I have, and this is their story.
