An ordinary happy family during the war

Ernest Ethel

The encounter was an accident, but they continued the accident, and together they completed an ordinary and happy life even in the war years.

This is a true story written by their son. It may be shown in the form of animation because in the author's memory, this is a very beautiful past. In the film, Ethel cries three times because he thinks he can't get pregnant, once to cut the baby's hair, and once to send the baby away because of the war. And at the end of the film, Ethel suffers from Alzheimer's disease, forgets Ernest, who he once loved most, only remembers his own child, and says he is a lucky girl. Sure enough, mothers all over the world are the same.

The most impressive thing is that on TV, humans finally landed on the moon and brought back the sand on the moon. She said, "It's like a child on the beach." Yes, isn't human beings always like a child! Even with the development of the times, the curiosity about the unknown and the long-cherished desire for a happy life have never changed.

Ethel & Ernest quotes

  • Ethel Briggs: I could have married a deep-sea diver.

Ernest Briggs: Well, why didn't ya?

Ethel Briggs: Because I didn't love him.

  • [first lines]

Raymond Briggs: [voice over] There was nothing extraordinary about my Mum and Dad, nothing dramatic, no divorce or anything, but they were my parents and I wanted to remember them by doing a picture book. It's a bit odd really, having a book about my parents up there in the best seller list among all the football heroes and cookbooks. They'd be proud of that, I suppose, or rather probably embarrassed too. I'd imagine they'd say, "It wasn't like that," or, "How can you talk about that?" Well, I have, and this is their story.
