Dongzhi and Hongmei

The first contact between Dong-sik and Hong-mei was when Hong-mei fell into the sea as a stowaways and was rescued by Dong-sik. From then on, Dongzhi had this woman in his heart. He covered her in the cold night, secretly hid her in the computer room, prepared a warm bed for her, brewed noodles for her, and bragged with her. Hearing her say that South Korea was looking for her brother, and that she promised to visit her at home after going ashore, the boy's eyebrows and eyes were filled with admiration for the woman in the red dress. But this love was doomed to be a tragedy from the very beginning. Hongmei was grateful to Dongzhi at first, and then moved. Later, when she witnessed the broken body and the killing of the chief engineer, her initial goodwill was replaced by fear and the desire to survive. The only person she can rely on is the person in front of her. She used her body to sign a life-and-death contract with him. When the environment in which the contract exists changes, the value of the contract disappears, and Hongmei finally leaves Dongzhi.

After reading some movie reviews, many people don't understand that Dong-sik can destroy the whole ship for one woman. In fact, many details in the film reveal that Dong-sik is a kind, careful and independent thinker. After the stowaways suffocated to death, the captain ordered the dismemberment, the uncertainty of the future, the chaos of time and space shrouded in sea fog, and the numbness caused by extreme fear began to lose control of human nature and lead to self-destruction, just like using one lie to cover another. Lie, the captain killed the chief engineer who could not be condemned by his conscience, and the death of the chief engineer who was regarded as his father by Dongzhi was a shock to Dongzhi's psychology. If Hongmei is a woman that Dongzhi likes, it would be better to say that Hongmei subconsciously represents Dongzhi's kind and guilt humanity.

Many people criticized the end of the film. If the film suddenly stopped when the two were floating on the sea or the line of footprints Dongzhi saw after waking up, the controversy would have been much less. Like lose and jack. I admire the courage of the director. He presented the naked reality bloody to the audience. What we cannot accept is our persistence. For Dong-sik and Hong-mei, love withers before it blooms.
