Yuan Ziwen in my mind is good at expressing the cruelty of reality with a lot of bloody footage. In the movie, there is a lot of blood plasma, pigments of various colors, flowing on people or on the ground, like a small river.
He loves porn and nudity, including his busty wife Megumi Kagurazaka. Even if I don't understand it, it keeps my attention and is worth the price and time.
He likes to pretend to be forceful, and uses famous lines from the Bible as lines and the motto of the protagonist, repeating it over and over again in the film, giving an impression that at least it looks awesome. I don't know if he and the audience understand the meaning of these famous sentences, or if the subtitle team has translated them correctly.
What's more perverted is that he has also directed the comedy of the time-limited police, like split personality, which is almost perverted.
Going back to this film, "Mediocre", there is no plasma, only rolling in the mud, dirty enough but not bloody. No porn, boring. There is pretence, but the lines are not enough, at least what is in the Bible. It feels like an atypical Yuan Ziwen movie.
However, combined with the Japan earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear leak, the open ending of the original comic has been modified to give positive incentives to the Japanese people. It may be better for Japan to rebuild after debt.
