"The Next Girl" review
"The Next Girl" is a masterpiece in Korean film history, and it was remade this year. I was lucky to have the opportunity to see the original at the Korean Film Festival.
The film tells the story of a piano teacher who does not seem to be very wealthy. She is very determined and refuses a letter from a female factory worker, causing the girl to be suspended from work and die of hatred. As he moved into his new home, he hired a maid, and under the temptation of the maid again and again, he finally had a relationship, and from then on, he walked step by step to the abyss of doom.
The source of the evil seems to be the exclusive desire of the maid over the male master. From then on, everyone, for their own interests, the piano teacher, the teacher's wife, the teacher's son and daughter, and of course the maid, all showed their evil side vividly, which is a carnival of evil human nature. In the end, everyone will not end well.
I admire the director's scheduling and photography for being able to shoot such a delicate film in such a small space. A little scary, a little suspenseful, the music is a simple repetition of noise, like an alarm bell to warn the world.
At the end of the film, the male protagonist suddenly appeared as an educator. It turned out that everything was imaginary. He laughed and warned the world, "Don't stretch out your hand, you will be caught if you stretch out your hand." I don't like this ending very much, because it's not natural and it weakens the criticism. However, it is indeed a genius to have such an idea more than 50 years ago.
The subject of the film caused quite a stir in the 1950s. Today, it still has its practical significance, no wonder it has to be remade. If you don't compare, you don't know whether it's good or bad, but if you look at the new version, you will know that the old version is excellent.
