Today, I watched Becoming Warren Buffett with my classmates from Curiosity School, a documentary that just came out earlier this year.
When I was a student, I often took some famous quotes as my standard, but limited by the amount of vision and reading, I often lacked more understanding of most celebrities themselves. Watching such biographical documentaries is not as good as a lot of related reading, but combined with Wikipedia, it is a very good way of common sense literacy.
I'm going to share three of my favorite passages from this documentary.
My favorite passage is the story of Buffett's application to Columbia University.
Of course he was lucky, but it wasn't just luck.
Who told him he could still do it? Also precisely because no one told him not to. In the face of these things that can be praised for a lifetime, if you can't do it, you will have nothing to lose. Those who are not cowardly will always gain something, and you must not worry too much.
And Buffett dared to do this, of course, on the one hand, because he read a lot, just swept through the works of these two professors. On the other hand, it lies in his value judgment of the action itself, which can be traced back to the source. This judgment also comes from the rationality brought by a lot of reading when he was a child, and his confidence in judgment may be attributed to the example of his parents, and The sense of security nurtured by open education under unconditional acceptance.
Buffett's father was a stock salesman who, after losing his job because of the Great Depression, chose to start an investment company with what little money he had. Such a non-cowardly father made Buffett admire him since he was a child, so he learned a lot from his father unknowingly. The strong personality of the mother also greatly influenced Buffett. It's for teaching.
And when Buffett made a mistake, his father quickly reassured him with unconditional acceptance. The open educational environment is the unstructured general reading and action that nurtured Buffett's ambition and courage since he was a child.
This is my second favorite paragraph, about the open learning environment.
Every Sunday, the Buffett family would go out to play. Buffett was exposed to arithmetic computers and became interested in numbers throughout his life, and quickly built his confidence through numbers games. The collection of books in his father's office, Buffett Jr. finished reading very early, and some books have been read more than once.
The unity of knowledge and action. He also sells Coke, chewing gum, magazines, newspapers. In particular, I like to deliver newspapers according to the route I plan. His father did not interfere with these autonomous explorations of his, believing that as long as he himself knew what he was doing, it was enough. And Buffett does know.
Of course he was lucky, but it wasn't just luck.
My third favorite passage, the most fundamental part of this open learning environment, is reading.
Buffett not only read his father's collection of books early, which opened his mind, but also quickly verified his experience on paper in action.
There is one detail that interests me in particular. He likes to go through the pages of books that don't seem to need to be flipped. Such as World Yearbook, Moody's Manual. The former not only completed general knowledge, but also helped Buffett confirm his digital talent very early, and the latter brought direct wealth to Buffett's investment.
When I was young, I also flipped through the encyclopedia, the Xinhua Dictionary, the Modern Chinese Dictionary and even the Cihai many times. It's hard for me to say what kind of educational value this process has brought, but I feel that it is of great value. It's hard for me to ask someone else to maybe do this, but do want to share this. But you can only experience the wisdom and fun of it when you consciously read it.
And this guy who has completed a successful investment without using electronic equipment, summed up his experience as follows:
Read all profiles of businesses you are interested in, and all profiles of competitors.
Of course he was lucky, but it wasn't just luck.
Buffett has a wish, he wants to be a teacher. In the documentary, he said to the students in front of him:
"
The world is as exciting as a movie, but you can't sleepwalk like that for the rest of your life. The important thing is to find something you are willing to do even if you don't need a job. You get up in the morning because you look forward to the day. For the past 60 years, I have been dancing to work every day because I like it. I just consider myself very lucky.
Of course he was lucky, but it wasn't just luck.
