This is a time-honored story. Two educated youths went to the countryside for re-education. They met a simple and bold but uneducated girl, and the three forged friendship and love. In that era when there was no reading, only manual labor and depressing thoughts, three young people stole a box of foreign literature to read together, and felt the power of literature, knowledge and freedom of thought. In the end, the girl was inspired by Balzac and went out of the mountains to find her new life. After watching the film, I had a deeper understanding of that group of intellectual youths with special backgrounds in that particular historical period. They are used as tools for work in the countryside, without reading or entertainment, their thoughts are imprisoned, and they are extremely miserable. Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, and Liu Ye are three partners. I like Liu Ye's performance the most. Those melancholy eyes and her restrained performance moved me very much. This is a good film, but I think the ending is a bit sudden, and some feelings have fallen, but it is not so flavorful.
