Our Contemporary "Sorrow"

This film, for me personally, is the quest for the elusive, and its consequences. All characters in the play cannot escape such boundary conditions: from the two boys, to the babysitter, to other characters who work silently, or long for some kind of belonging. Although everyone's situation is different, their loss, disappointment, confusion and despair are common.

This deep pity for imperfect ordinary people, and the understanding of the "sorrow" in our life, permeates most of Wang Xiaoshuai's works: "Second Brother", "Girl with a Pole Pole", "Qinghong", and so on. This is the closest Chinese movie we have seen to Yasujiro Ozu or Jiyoshi Naruse's "sorrowful" emotion.

The so-called humanistic tradition of "sympathy for the heavens and the people" has finally appeared in the Chinese film industry again. Not only in the movie world, but also in novels, songs, and plays, Wang Xiaoshuai and Jia Zhangke are the only two remaining humanists in China.
