As ordinary police cannot complete some special tasks, special police forces have emerged. We are more familiar with the "Flying Tigers" in Hong Kong or the "Thunderbolt Team" in Taiwan. The story of "Elite Force" starts with Rio de Janeiro's Military Police Special Forces (BOPE). Due to the large number of slums in the city, drug dealers and crimes, BOPE often takes the dirty work of fighting criminals with powerful firepower. As a well-trained combat unit that is good at street fighting, its logo is a skull with a dagger and two pistols crossed on it. It looks terrifying and has a great deterrent effect. The essence of BOPE's combat is to eliminate the enemy and complete the mission in the shortest time and with the highest efficiency. Since the police and the robbers do not stand together, it is normal for the criminals to be frightened of it. If even the passers-by and civilians in the slums are also afraid, then you can see the "speciality" of this force-because there are frequent negative reports of bullets disturbing the people and hurting people.
"Elite Force" tells the story of this special team, the main characters are a captain and two team members. The captain wanted to leave BOPE due to family pressure and was unable to do so. The two young men saw through the corruption and hypocrisy and chose to join BOPE. The film is adapted from the original work written by a sociologist and two BOPE team members. The book caused heated discussions after the market because the book described BOPE as a killing machine and other sensitive content. All of this is reflected in the film by violent extortion of confessions and retaliatory shooting of "just seeking results, unscrupulous". At the end, there is a scene where a shotgun is aimed at the face of a drug dealer leader, showing the intention to vent his anger. Fortunately, this is only a movie. Otherwise, the international human rights organization might have seen it infringe and trample on human rights. However, the movie begins with the words that really matter.
As the hottest Brazilian film of 2007, the film won the Golden Bear, the highest honor at the Berlin Film Festival in February. The excitement of "Elite Force" is not inferior to any classic police shootout film. Through the protagonist's monologue throughout the film, the cause and effect are revealed: the Pope visited Rio de Janeiro in 1997 and will inspect a certain slum. It happens to be a criminal paradise with drug dealers and chaotic public security. The Rio de Janeiro authorities must start to remediate this place and do a good job of face engineering. In terms of the subject matter, "Elite Forces" and 2002's "City of God" have many similarities. They both learn from the truth, and they also talk about crimes and violence that cannot be eradicated. They also involve the cancer in Rio de Janeiro and even Brazil --- "Law Vera" (Favela, Brazil's name for slums).
The film always maintains a fast-paced narration, unabashedly exposing the dark corners of the city. Flies do not bite seamless eggs, and it is the police station’s corruption and black-and-white collusion that clearly correspond to the crime of drug cartels. "Elite Troops" also talked about the inevitable polarization between the rich and the poor. The law student Matthias had no choice but to teach a dude hard, he was no longer an idealist, but more determined as a man. The determination of BOPE members. The Matthias plunged into the battlefield of Favila, reluctantly participating in the cleansing operations again and again. Just as BOPE upholds can only use violence to combat violence with high principles, but it cannot eliminate the root cause of crime. They are not holding a high-hanging posture, because Favila's problems should not be borne by them. The power of oneself or the violence of a group of people cannot prevent the cancer from getting worse in the entire city. They can't seem to see the hope of peace, and they can't get rid of it.
Director Jos Padiha did not show his position, just as he did not take the risk to choose to shoot a BOPE documentary (too much insider involved, fear of retaliation). He adopted an attitude of dealing with things and not with people, telling us a series of things that happened in this city of God ten years ago. To this day, the dark clouds that hung over Favila have not moved far from Rio de Janeiro. News of police rushing and civilian deaths is common in newspapers. The continuation of violence does not solve many problems, but it can solve you - this you refer to the innocent drug lord, the member of the drug cartel or even the innocent victim. Using violence to control violence is not a good method, more often it is a method that has to be adopted, and the BOPE players must be well aware of this truth.
