Commentary video at station B: Mother's Day is coming, this film is dedicated to the most important person of mother
Although the film has many imitations of "Forrest Gump", the elderly makeup is not satisfactory. However, there are still many resonances in the life of traditional Eastern values. No matter how old-fashioned parents are today, they also have youthful youth; no matter how unreasonable the old people are, they may just be stubborn children in their hearts... Mother's Day, this film is dedicated to every mother The most important person.
The following is the copy of the commentary video at station B. It is strongly recommended to watch the video directly. Reading the copy alone may cause all kinds of embarrassment and discomfort!
Today I bring you a Korean movie "International Market 국제시장 (2014)". Known as the Korean version of "Forrest Gump (1994)", the "tens of millions" movie tells the story of a man's half-life of hardships and ups and downs. (Note: South Korea records the box office by the number of moviegoers, and movies that reach 10 million views are known as high-box-office movies, also known as "tens of millions" movies)
At the beginning of the film, from the perspective of a butterfly, the large-scale bazaar located in the first generation of Sinchang-dong, Jung-gu, Busan City, presents the whole picture of the international market. Then Butterfly led the audience to the rooftop of the male protagonist Yin Dexiu's house. He and his wife were looking at Busan Port not far away, and they talked about their dream of becoming a captain. The wife said that this was the first time she knew her husband. dream.
Now Yin Dexiu, who has many children and grandchildren and runs a market shop, should be amiable and happy, but he frowns all day and gets along poorly with the people around him: his wife doesn't seem to know him well; his children blame him for not taking good care of his mother; The grandchildren are only close to their grandmother; they are rude and rude in the face of the staff who came to discuss the store acquisition; even the owners of the surrounding stores are full of complaints against him.
It was only when he was with his little granddaughter that Deok-soo showed a smile. When discussing the topic of "memories" with his granddaughter, Dexiu was knocked to the ground by a pedestrian, and he instinctively stretched out his hand to hold his granddaughter, so the "memories" came to 64 years ago.
In 1950, the Korean War broke out. At the end of the year, the defeated U.S. military was evacuated from the sea. At the same time, 100,000 North Korean refugees flocked to Heungnam Port in South Hamgyong Province to board the ship to escape, including the Deoksoo family. Just as she was about to climb onto the ship, Mo Shun, the second sister on Dexiu's back, was pulled by the refugees behind and fell off the boat. Dexiu weakly grabbed a piece of fabric on her sister's sleeve, and her father was looking for it when she got off the boat. Before my sister, Dexiu was asked to take on the responsibility of a parent and take good care of her family. Shortly after my father disembarked, the boat sailed, and flesh and blood were separated.
In 1951, Deok-soo and his mother took their younger brother and younger sister to the Busan International Market to join their aunt Yin Huafen. Complaining about the cramped room and the smell of alcohol from my uncle, the family started a new life at the small shop "Polyfen House" run by my aunt. Dexiu also went to school with his little sister on his back, and at the same time met a buddy who accompanied him all his life - Qiandajiu. In their spare time, Dexiu and Dajiu make money by cleaning shoes on the side of the road. At this time, the peninsula has been officially divided into two parts, the north and the south, and the hometown is the north that can never be returned.
The montage's parallel image travels back to modern times again, and the aged Da Jiu is also persuading Dexiu to sell the shop, but Dexiu also rudely refuses Da Jiu. While intervening to discourage a small ethnic dispute between a group of middle school students and foreigners, Dexiu was pushed to the ground, and at this time, time went back to the past. (Interlude, the film uses this parallel montage technique many times, alternating between two time and space, but the connection is perfect and natural, without any violation)
In 1963, Deok-soo, an adult, was kicked out of school because he couldn't pay the tuition fees. For his mother, who was too old to give birth, and his younger brother, who needed tuition fees for admission to Seoul University, Deok-soo came to the pier to work as a coolie to earn money. Dexiu, who was worried about making money, learned from the newspaper provided by Dajiu that the state was recruiting Ped miners. After experiencing some inner struggles, Dexiu decided to sign up. After passing the physical test, written test and interview, Dexiu and Dajiu embarked on the road to Germany.
In 1964, in the deep well of Duisburg where the sun did not see the light, Dexiu was accompanied by hunger, hard work, and work-related injuries every day. And all of this is melted by the beautiful singing of the Rhine River. During a spring tour, Dexiu met Yingzi, a fellow nurse working in Germany, by chance. Dexiu was attracted by Yingzi's beauty, gentleness and cheerfulness, and Yingzi was also moved by Dexiu's honest and upright personality. The two hard-working and lonely souls gradually approached in a foreign country. In a mine accident, Dexiu was trapped underground in order to save Dajiu. Yingzi and the miners broke through the mine owner's block and resolutely went down to rescue Dexiu and Dajiu.
Deok-soo's visa expired and returned to Busan. The family has also improved their lives because of Dexiu's generous income in Germany, and her aunt also intends to pass on the "Pollen House" to Dexiu.
Yingzi suddenly appears in front of Dexiu and informs Dexiu that she is pregnant. It turned out that the night before Dexiu returned to China, he asked Yingzi to go with him, but after Yingzi refused, he was moved by Dexiu and became indescribable. So the two got married.
In 1973, Dexiu was admitted to the Ocean University of his dreams. Just as he returned home excitedly, he heard his little sister complain to her mother that she could not spend more money to prepare for her wedding. At the same time, Dexiu had to buy back the shop from his uncle when his uncle wanted to sell the "Pollen House" after his aunt died. Dexiu, who needed the two money, gave up Ocean University and went to Vietnam to work as a technical worker. Deok-soo survives a suicide bombing, but is disabled for life after being shot in the left leg to save a girl during a jungle escape.
Back in Busan, Deok-soo redecorated the "Pollen House" and sent his younger sister to the marriage hall. Back in modern times, the elderly brother and sister also persuaded Dexiu to sell the shop. Dexiu was furious, and his family was puzzled. It turned out that when his father disembarked to look for his second sister, he had explained that Dexiu would be reunited in the "Pollen House" in the future. Dexiu guards the shop, just so that one day, his father can come back here.
In 1983, KBS TV planned a family search program (based on true history) for families separated during the war. Family members continue to find lost relatives. And Dexiu also came to the Capital Studio to participate. Dexiu was very disappointed after the other party admitted the wrong person to find a relative and failed to match, but he still stuck to the outside of the TV station square. Finally, a reporter from Los Angeles, USA, contacted KBS TV and informed him that they had found Yin Moshun, the suspected second sister.
The middle-aged Korean woman on the other end of the TV, who did not remember her Korean name or her hometown, told in English the scene when she was separated from her relatives. She, who does not speak Korean, deeply remembers carrying him on her back that day. What her brother said to her, she said in not fluent Korean, "This is not a playground, not to come out to play, I have to hold my brother's hand firmly", and took out the missing piece she was wearing. A small hanbok with one sleeve.
This scene can be said to be the climax of the whole show and the high point of tearjerking. The two brothers and sisters who cannot communicate with each other in words, recognize each other thousands of miles apart, which is embarrassing.
The second sister returned to South Korea with her husband and children to reunite with her family. Time returns to modern times again. The family laughs and laughs in the living room, but Dexiu returns to the room alone. This man who has worked hard for his family for half a century, facing the photo of his father, cried like a child and said, " I'm really working hard", holding his father's clothes and missing his father. In the living room next door, the family clapped and sang.
At the end of the film, returning to the rooftop at the beginning, Dexiu finally decided to sell the shop, and the butterfly at the beginning also spread its wings and flew into the distance. Dexiu let go of his obsession, because his father will always be in his heart.
"International Market" conveys an oriental value of sacrificing the individual and fulfilling everyone. Dexiu sacrificed everything for himself in exchange for a happy life for his family, and became the eldest brother like a father. The director of the film, Yoon Ji-kyun, presents similar values in his other film, Haeundae. This point is worth thinking or discussing for us who are also Orientals.
