From Marceau's point of view, the whole film is like a beautiful version of "The Metamorphosis", and from Bellucci's point of view, the whole film is like a journey of memory exploration. From the perspective of combining the two, you can understand it as the imagination of a schizophrenic patient, but the last sentence of the little girl completely overturned this conclusion.
The shot of the two together at the end confuses all the possibilities even more ambiguous.
