After watching "Don't Look Back" starring Sophie Marceau and Monica, my brain seemed to go to a pulp. This kind of film with "psychology" as its signboard can really exercise the reasoning ability of nerve cells.
The first reasoning: Sophie is not dead, Monica is dead.
Extending from the beginning of the film to the next, what I feel is the life that Sophie can really touch. She is a female writer and has a very stressful job. There are two children in the family, a boy and a girl. The husband is considerate and competent, and can prepare a hearty breakfast for the children. Sophie's eyes have always been dull, she feels strange about the life around her, and the woman in the photo will always transform into another face. And on the street, she could see the back of a little girl who was lost in a hurry. There is a vague shadow in Sophie's consciousness, she is like a hidden soul fiddling with everything in real life. "You're probably too tired." "Aren't you getting a good rest?" Sophie's eyes were even more absent-minded by her husband and mother's questions. She was looking for clues that she had mutated in many photos. She would see a woman spinning around her in the middle of the night, and she finally found Monica's shadow in the film. When I watched the first half of the movie, I always felt that Sophie represented a pressure group with split personality and psychological burden.
Second reasoning: Monica is not dead, Sophie is dead.
When the film progresses to the middle, Sophie's spirit fluctuates greatly. She couldn't find her way home, and drove her car around a similar street. She wanted to get out of the misplaced thinking, but the living environment that seemed familiar but completely unfamiliar made her resist with all her strength. Finally, the real Sophie turned into the real Monica. Such a transition process makes it difficult to complete the transition mentally. I originally thought that the director was starting another person's life, but Monica's body still has Sophie's soul. There are many incomprehensible blind spots intertwined in this gradual process. Monica's memory of her mother actually exists three women at the same time, overlapping and intertwining with each other. Her state is very similar to Sophie, Zhang Huang is at a loss, trying to find something that has been lost in his life. In the end, Monica came to Italy from France, and her mental state changed just like her physical body. A lost girl, an indifferent mother, a man who seems familiar, a scene like a silent movie... A dream-like scene is imagined beside Monica. Everything became a mystery. However, the interspersed montage technique made me affirm the existence of Monica's real life.
The third reasoning: Monica is not dead, and Sophie is not "dead" either.
Towards the end of the film, Sophie and Monica are writing together in front of the computer. The eyes of the two lingered, as if there was a constant intimacy involved. So I thought of the two little girls who were happy and playful in the second half of the film, Sophie and Monica in childhood. They often stick together and play happily. Sadly, a car accident took Sophie's life. Since then, Monica has hosted another soul in her spiritual world. She thought of herself as Sophie who was still alive, though sometimes suddenly awake. The lost memory became a strange girl that Monica wanted to pursue but was afraid to pursue. She was silent and panicked, which repeatedly led Monica to vaguely choose to give up in her infinite yearning. But in the end, Monica was relieved. When she found the memory that she couldn't face directly, Sophie's shadow really appeared in front of her eyes. Monica is not dead, she has a real life; Sophie is not "dead", because her soul has always been treasured in Monica's heart.
This is the pinnacle of French beauty and Italian beauty. Although there is no life-and-death battle, the atmosphere created by the film is really eye-catching. The acting is very good, the lighting scene is very good, and the psychological interpretation is also in place, but there are too many plots left for the audience to reprocess at the end of the film.
This movie is not very well understood. Although the title of the film is "Don't Look Back", it can only be roughly sorted out by going back and forth again and again.
