The English name of this film, Martyrs, is literally translated as "Martyrs." This word mainly refers to people who were martyred by Christianity. I didn't read the introduction at first. I only read the English name. I thought it was a movie related to martyrdom. I didn't expect it to be a horror movie. However, the ending of the protagonist Anna in the film is indeed borrowed from the experience of one of the twelve apostles, Bardolo Mai.
Forty days after the resurrection and appearance of the Lord Jesus, after ascending to heaven on the Mount of Olives, the disciples received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, and then began to preach the gospel of the kingdom of heaven in the will of the Lord Jesus. Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles, traveled to Armenia to preach. He was persecuted and eventually martyred for the Lord, beheaded, peeled, and crucified upside down. Among the many sculptures and paintings, the image of Bardolo Mai is peeled, even holding his own skin. For example, in the famous painting "The Last Judgment " by Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Renaissance , near the center of the picture, the one who descended from the sky holding his own skin to announce the trial is Bartolomé.
Buy it for Bardolo
The statue bought by Bardolo in the Milan Cathedral is also skinned and only muscles are left
There is also this statue, not only holding his own skin but also holding a cutting knife, showing the way of martyrdom
The director of this film must have been inspired by the experience of Bartolobuy to make up this story. Because Bartolo Mai is one of the most famous and representative martyrs, namely Martyr (also the title of the film). The translation of the film as "Martyred" is somewhat inaccurate, and the organization ended up offering Anna a sacrifice. "Martyred" is a bit far from this theme.
The first feeling after watching this movie is that he is borrowing the story of Bardolo. After reading the film reviews, it seems that no one has mentioned this point yet, so I would like to add it. From this point of view, the story is much clearer, that is, the director weaves the ending of Bardoro into a current story. It may also be the director's understanding of Martyr (Martyr). In fact, Bardolobu is Martyred for the truth of the Lord and imitated the teachings of the Lord Jesus, but this director completely misinterpreted this meaning and pursued curiosity.
