Most of Peng Fei's films have social themes. Even love sketches like Zhiming and Chunjiao are mixed with the main thread of social topics. Therefore, Peng Fei's films should be said to be quite content. Of course, as a director who poisons people's hearts, black is always the main theme. This movie, Victoria One, is, in a word, a masterpiece of film noir.
The social background of this film reminds me of Zhang Wanting's City of Glass. In my eyes, City of Glass is the most Hong Kong-flavored literary film that has not been surpassed for many years. Remember when Daniel Wu returned to Hong Kong as an ABC and faced the impersonal glass building, he said, Hong Kong? Bullshit. I really hate it. This city is prosperous and bastards. Living in this city, the little people who are struggling with the bottom line of life are even more calm before others, turning around and looking hideous.
Victoria No. 1 gives me the greatest feeling, or my two favorite points. In addition to the emphasis on the theme of the bloody scenes, the first point is that the director deliberately re-arranges the timeline. It's not as simple as enhancing visibility in my eyes. In my understanding, if you use the sequence, maybe you can better understand the mental journey of a small person from having a dream, to being squeezed and distorted by reality, and finally to the disillusionment of human nature. But Peng Fei is obviously not looking for such an effect. The feeling he gave me was that he wanted to be calm, not to have a lot of inner drama, not to struggle again and again, toss and turn or not to fall into the clichés, what he wanted was peace. It is to achieve some behaviors made in the dream, of course, to highlight the extreme numbness.
The second point, He Chaoyi must be mentioned here. Those fans who pursue inner changes and inner feelings may guess that she herself is an actor without inner drama, so she cannot perform inner hesitation. I'm more inclined to be the style of the movie set by Peng, and the actors did it perfectly. Because of the feeling of the movie, He Chaoyi is almost a person without much expression. She is chatting with friends, talking to her brother about buying a new building, killing people, being questioned by the police, borrowing money for a man after KJ, dumping him, moving in The new building, in fact, the expression has not changed much. And you haven't been able to figure out too much of her thoughts through her expressions. If this is the director's request, then from the perspective of this film, the character conception and performance are too perfect. The director only asks everyone to quietly know the origin of this little guy's dream, to watch her calmly kill people, and watch her complete her dream, but it is more heart-warming than any hysterical and lengthy inner drama. And He Chaoyi did perform this feature. A person only wants to survive and live numbly in a numb city. Some people choose the numb way of the general public, and some people are numb to the point of distorting human nature. In fact, they are all the same.
I don't know how to introduce the Victoria One to a friend unless I know for sure that he will appreciate it. Otherwise, I don't know how to face such bloody, disgusting, messy, and unknown so-called rhetorical questions. I can only feel a pity, a pity for such a movie with a dark plot, a good movie that is stronger by ignoring the inner drama.
