"Annette" was my fourth exposure to Karax, and I approached it with purpose - to understand why Karax's films are weird.
I convince myself this way: Director Card wants to have his own circus.
Both "Annette" and "Bad Blood" are heavily traditionally structured. "Bad Blood" is more spiritual. The maturity of "Annette" makes this film more fun to find.
1. A large number of repetitive lyrics in the film not only stimulate the audience's senses, but also imply the repetition of fate (in fact, it is not so exaggerated, but I don't know how to express it more precisely, referring to the alternation of Anne and Annette and the occurrence of on-stage and Murder in the mind and romantic affairs with women from various countries are repeated in reality).
2. There are three dialogues with the audience in the film (the one at the beginning is more interesting, which combines film and reality) to increase the experience of the game. Just like McLuhan's evaluation of the game, this design is easier for the audience Go to the movies and play this marriage game. The last "end of the play", which is similar to an easter egg, gives the movie a sense of the stage. All the staff come to the stage to call the curtain, which is very romantic.
3. The apple that Annie took a bite of, I didn't deliberately think of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, but turned a corner and thought of Adam Driver, the experimental male protagonist.
The fun of finding doesn't make me rate this film too high. For me personally, the card guide who always likes to put old wine in a new bottle did not play very well this time. The cheesy stories of "Lovers in New Bridge" and "Bad Blood" are magical with the exclusive settings of the card guide. And the setting of "Annette" this time did not make the eyes shine.
There are two other amazing things about Director Card. The first is that the logical structure of his films seems to be random, and there are many plots that cannot be seen whether he did it intentionally or appeared naturally. Another very important point is also the foundation that enables Karax to build a circus: Director Card likes to do it the other way around and let his character play the actor. Oscar in "Holy Cars" as a variety of life participants, Alex in "New Bridge Lovers" performing acrobatics, and "Annette" in comedy and opera. This design is matched with the monkeys and orangutans that the director has always liked, so that watching his films always reminds me of the circus that toured the county during the Chinese New Year as a child. After more than ten years, the circus never came back. But the director of the card will not. After watching "Annette", I began to look forward to the next New Year.
