The Dig
This film is adapted from John Preston's 2007 novel of the same name based on real people and real events.
On the eve of World War II, Mrs. Pritty (Carey Mulligan), a wealthy widow living in Sutton Ho Village, hired amateur archaeologist Mr. Brown (Ralph Fiennes) in 1939 on the eve of World War II. ) Dig a few small hills in her manor. According to legend, these are the burial grounds of the Vikings, but Mr. Brown thinks it is earlier, that is, the year of Yanglo-Saxon.
During the digging process, they first saw a rivet, and they knew it was a play based on experience. They dug and dug, and they dug up a big wooden boat. And it's Yangro Saxon's ship. It was news now, and the director of the county museum brought a large force to take over the entire excavation. Fortunately, Mr. Brown continued to participate in the excavation and achieved a start and a finish. They found a lot of beautiful artworks from all over the world, and they are sure to be the relics of Yanglu-Saxon in the 6th century. These are precious cultural relics in British history that have never been seen before. Mrs. Pritty decided to donate these to the museum.
Germany invaded Poland, and Britain and France formally declared war on Germany. The British people are preparing for the coming hard time. Mr. Brown and his colleagues buried the excavated ship again.
The early history of Britain is a history of foreign invasion. The Celts were first driven out from Europe, and then there was a powerful Roman legion. After the fall of the empire, the Germanic Yanglu and Saxons came across the strait from the European continent, followed by the murderous Vikings of Northern Europe, and don't forget the French conqueror William. Among them, apart from the Roman Empire and William the Conqueror, the Celtics were refugees who had escaped. Yanglu and the Saxons were just a group of hillbillies from Germany and Sweden, and the Vikings were pirates who did not blink. But today's British people all agree that the Yanglo-Saxons are their ancestors, and their language is the predecessor of today's English. The English that countless people around the world gnaw at today is the result of this group of people.
The Yangglu-Saxons began to invade Britain in 449 AD, and established seven kingdoms in the United Kingdom in 500 AD. Mrs. Pritty’s manor was located in the Kingdom of East Anglia at that time. And buried there is the King of East Anglia. The form of the funeral is similar to that of the tombs excavated in Sweden during the same period. There are gold wares and many silver wares in the cultural relics. In addition to the gleaming golden helmet and armor, there are also Byzantine silver plates, Greek silver bowls, silver cups, silver spoons, and bronzes from the Near East. I used to think that the Yangglu-Saxon period was a "dark age" with no culture and taste after the disappearance of the empire. Now it has been discovered that these Yanglu-Saxons are no longer land reclamation farmers facing the blue sky and facing the loess. It is a fashionable kingdom that has close contacts with the outside world. For this reason, it is not surprising that Sutton Hoo Village has become the highlight of British archaeology. Seeing that the ancestors did not scum off the soil, the British were still happy.
The story is mixed with the outbreak of World War II. From the Kingdom of East Anglia to the Kingdom of Great Britain today, there have been countless wars in the British Isles. From Yanglo-Saxons, Vikings, Invasion of William the Conqueror, Crusaders, Battle of the Roses, Hundred Years War between England and France, Spanish Invincible Fleet, Battle of Waterloo, Battle of Verdun, Dunkirk Retreat, Normandy Landing , Joining and exiting the European Union. Even though the queen and her husband of the dynasty are both descendants of Germans, in short, although Britain and the European continent are separated by a strait, they either fight or do business, and then the royal family intermarries with each other. Relationship.
Archeology is not only a technical job, but also a hard job. Regardless of the wind and sun, you have to lie on the ground with a spatula or a small brush and scrab it on the ground for a day. And you must be very careful. For example, the Yanglo-Saxon boat here, because the original wooden planks and wooden frames have long been rotted, but the acid produced by the rotting wood can change the soil quality and distinguish it from the original soil. When digging, the two types of soil must be distinguished, otherwise one Going down with the shovel, there is nothing left. It's good to be able to dig things. Sometimes digging for months or even a year and nothing is found, it is really frustrating.
