In fact, this is a history that we don’t know very well. We know that the Poles are suffering, but we don’t know that it is so bitter.
The film is based on the experience of a village from 1939 to 1944, and shows that cruel and bloody history from the perspective of a Polish woman. I won't talk about history here, but mainly about film shooting techniques.
This is an extreme realism film, with a large number of massacre scenes that are direct, cold, violent, and cruel, making it unbearable to watch.
The perspective of the film is very single, basically using the experience of the heroine Zosia to describe the tragic world she witnessed.
The film uses a strong contrasting technique. From the beginning, it is a happy and harmonious song and dance scene. People sing, dance, drink, have sex, and play to their heart's content, which is used to contrast the suffering scene that will appear later.
Of course, there are more contrasts in details. However, when I first watched it, I couldn't see the eyes, and only later I remembered those similar shots.
Due to the lack of understanding of the historical background and the strong face blindness, many people could not tell which ones are Poles, which ones are Ukrainians, which ones are Russians, and only Germans can tell by looking at the uniform. Identify it.
The first half of the film still has a plot, a bit like a historical blockbuster or "White Deer Plain" and "Alive", but in the second half, there is only a superimposed display of various murderous massacres. Frankly, while the director has the courage to reveal this history, the subsequent carnage scenes are still a bit unrestrained, and Zosia's escape is only for her and the audience to witness these bloody scenes repeatedly. This is a bit like "120 Days of Sodom", "The Chainsaw", etc. It also uses various disgusting scenes repeatedly to show the evil and perversion of human nature.
In this way, the first half of this movie is a drama, and the second half is a horror movie. It is best for audiences with weak psychological tolerance not to watch the second half, otherwise they will feel hopeless in the world.
In terms of the plot setting, it should also be the director's helplessness, because the various characters that appeared in the front are all dead in half or most of the film, leaving only Zosia and the child, what is the story? What about going on?
It can be said that this is also some of the shortcomings of this movie. It is very real, very rough, very direct, bloody, and undisguised. It makes people feel like witnessing a scene in a slaughterhouse, but it is not close to the master level. Then a little bit.
