Phantom Light

In the film about loss, about life and death, after the heroine's lover committed suicide, she remarried with her child. In the ordinary seaside life, she recalled why her ex-husband committed suicide and couldn't help himself. The current one said "a beautiful light is calling from a distance" at the seaside. It shows that we want to let go of the past trauma, let the dead be at peace, and let the living no longer suffer. It was Hirokazu Kore-eda who used a very soothing rhythm, beautiful soundtrack and large-scale use of sea and sky shots to make the whole film look beautiful, diluting the sadness and giving life to the beauty, and regaining the hope of life.

Maborosi quotes

  • Yumiko: It's harder to say goodbye if we keep postponing it.

  • Yumiko: [Recalling her first husband's unexplained suicide] I just... I just don't understand! Why did he kill himself? Why was he walking along the tracks? It just goes around and around in my head. Why do you think he did it?

Tamio: [after giving it some thought] The sea has the power to beguile. Back when dad was fishing, he once saw a maborosi - a strange light - far out to sea. Something in it was beckoning to him, he said... It happens to all of us.
