In 1998, I planned a movie that was originally planned to be released in 2000, called "Relationship between Men and Women". I wanted to invite one or four directors to make four stories, which coincided with the idea of director Hou Da. However, I chose the most representative years in modern Chinese history: 1919, 1949, 1968 and 2000. The main scene of the four stories is the same courtyard. During the May 4th, it is said that a person in this courtyard refused to marry. A little girl from a stranger’s house was locked up by her family and starved to death (taken from real events at the time); in 1949, a Kuomintang soldier had a vague love affair with a girl in the yard, and finally the Kuomintang soldier went to Taiwan; in 1968, Organization introduction, the young couple who are about to get married are in this crowded courtyard to paint the new house where the May Fourth girl lived. It is very revolutionary and very pure. , this yard was demolished and turned into an open park, where a boy and a girl met...
Unfortunately, the title alone could not be passed.
Probably because in the 1960s Gangfeng was director Hou Da's own youth, so the story of this paragraph is the one he is most familiar with and is good at grasping, so it is very handy to shoot.
Fixed camera positions, long shots, and objective representation of the original ecology of life as much as possible. This is a major characteristic that Hou learned from Japanese film master Yasujiro Ozu. This is also his consistent aesthetic pursuit. Many cutting-edge directors, including Jia Zhangke, also All learned this. Some are used well, while others are just as effective.
I'm probably from this era, so I really think it was the best time. At that time, both men and women were very feudal, and even in entertainment venues like the billiard room, the closest way between men and women was to play ball together silently and attentively, without flirting and flirting. The child's shyness to the girl he likes is no more than a careful, polite letter.
The girl named Chunzi apparently did not reply to Zhang Zhen's letter, but casually threw the letter in the common drawer of the billiard room and left. When Shu Qi took over Chunzi's class, he hadn't met Zhang Zhen yet, but read his letter first. He mentioned the name of the song in the letter. This song about love sounded at the right time. Shu Qi was doing boring work in the song, hoping that he would also have such a love.
It can be imagined how uncomfortable Zhang Zhen, a young man who has just lost his mother, will be to the life in the barracks, so he hopes to have an outlet, someone who can listen to him, if this person happens to be as beautiful, gentle and gentle as Shu Qi. An understanding girl, what a happy thing that should be. He politely expressed his wishes in a letter to Shu Qi, and mentioned the Beatles' "Rain and Tears", which was popular all over the world at the time.
This touching song suddenly rang in Shu Qi's ears. This time, the song was for her. Her heart was filled with happiness. As a girl like her, who is engaged in the "escort" profession, she is also a woman. How much she hoped and dared not hope that she could get the true love of a young man, so although she wrote back to Zhang Zhen, she still floated away unsurely, standing on the bow of the boat sailing away from Kaohsiung. The stupid expression is painful.
When Zhang Zhen received Shu Qi's reply in the barracks, he could imagine how his emotions would be surging, so during his short vacation, he would travel all over the island of Taiwan to search for this girl desperately and anxiously, and even found Shu Qi's home through the police station.
When Shu Qi, who was working in the billiards room, turned around and saw Zhang Zhen, who had come to her silently, she couldn't believe that she had such good luck, so she would laugh like that, uncontrollably happy, but with some self-deprecation and ridicule, I am afraid that Zhang Zhen is not really taking it seriously.
Then, the two were eating fish ball powder on the street. Zhang Zhen was stunned while eating, and Shu Qi was still looking at the big boy beside him again and again as if he couldn't believe it... It was raining, and again In "Rain and Tears" by The Beatles, which sounded dull and bright, the two ran to the station together to catch a train. Zhang Zhen had to go back to the barracks. The parting was imminent. Never be separated again.
Rain and tears are all the same
But in the sun
you've got to play the game
When you cry in winter time
You can't pretend it's nothing but the rain
How many times I've seen
Tear's coming from you blue eyes
Rain and tears are all the same
But in the sun you' ve got to play the game
Give me the moods of love
And I need the moods of love
Rain and tears in the sun for in your heart
You feel the rainbow waves
Rain and tears both are show for in my heart
The live will be the sun
Rain and tears are all the same
Rain in the sun you've got to play the game
Such a period of time is of course the best. In the social customs of men and women not being close to each other, every boy and girl may taste the delicate and sadness of being entangled in love. The pure love of you is hard to say in my heart" will make the little heart of every person in love throb and tremble every second, and now, after reading "What to Move, Don't Move Your Feelings", you will know that everything is So rough and direct, those graceful and elegant love experiences, that kind of restrained and reserved feelings and tune are gone forever... Fortunately, I have enjoyed this panic and beauty :-)
Therefore, this section is called "Dream of Love".
In 2002, when I made the animation art short "Tree", I also used the silent film effect that Director Hou Da used in the second story. The reason why I dealt with it like that was entirely because the painting bobbins provided me with it. There is not enough material, so we have to adapt to local conditions and make it a unique style by adding subtitles and other means. Since the picture is a visual effect of black and white sketches, it feels that the style is unified.
Looking at the passage of Hou Dao now, I feel that the master is indeed pursuing, but it is really not in place. He used the subtitle method of silent films, and also partially used the soundtrack method in music, but he did not do the corresponding simple treatment visually. The whole picture was warm and delicate, and lacked the intermittent graininess that silent films should have. , the text of the subtitles is not well thought out, and the words of the subtitles are not succinct. The May 4th White Movement has not yet started, and it is really difficult to grasp the proportions. .
But in addition to the effect of separation, I still admire Master Hou's accurate grasp of the era through various details. Following the first paragraph of the relationship between Zhang Zhen and Shu Qi holding hands, the two appear like a loving, tacit understanding and respectful young couple. However, this is the short life of a prostitute in a brothel and her regular customers. Director Hou is very accurate about the relationship between the two people. One is a confidante who knows about Da Li, and the other is a revolutionary who treats this place as an office. There is absolutely no conceptualization and demonization in mainland domestic films. Which domestic film are you in? In the film, I have seen how a woman in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China combed that black and thick braid for her beloved? Such touching details of daily life have never been taken seriously by our mainland directors...
The title of this paragraph is "Dream of Freedom". Both of them are dreaming of freedom, one is for China's freedom, the other is for their own redemption, and the man who is thinking about liberating the whole of China can't give his beloved woman a share. Freedom and steadfastness... This story has already paved the way for the next "Dream of Youth".
Director Hou probably doesn't understand or appreciate the lavish lifestyle and seemingly casual attitude of today's young people, so what he wants to say in this paragraph is that today's men and women are really free, but , When you get full freedom, does life really become better?
The whole tone of this paragraph is cold, and even people's makeup has been turned into a dirty mess. Shu Qi is portrayed as a young girl who squanders her youth. She, that girl, and Zhang Zhen are actually the same. She was looking for a feeling that could make her own heart beat, but how could she find a way of life like hers? Therefore, Director Hou asked her to hurt herself while hurting others. This girl has become so numb that she can't see the future...
Personally, I think that every era has its beauty, and all the youthful times are beautiful and beautiful. A lot of money has been squandered by ignorant men and women, and the "old man Hou" who lives today is destined to be a nostalgic person. Today's life makes him confused and uncomfortable, so he uses this film to be sincere, serious and serious. Seriously expressed his feelings, whether you like it or not, as long as you stick to the end, you will naturally receive this sincere affection from Director Hou :-)
