"Return" is adapted from Yan Geling's novel "Lu Yanshi", which describes the story of the hero Lu Yanshi's "return", focusing on Feng Wanyu's waiting. Even though Lu Yanshi had already returned, in Feng Wanyu's mind, Lu Yanshi, who was thousands of miles away, was still on the train that arrived on the "fifth day".
The director uses this method to indirectly express the deep love between the two of them. Unlike the plot of Lu Yanshi's escape in the film, Feng Wanyu's waiting appears calm and long against the dim light and slow rhythm in the film. Behind the lackluster daily life is Feng Wanyu's unrepentant dedication and perseverance.
The two had to be separated due to the times. Their meager power could not change the times, but the times could not change the true feelings of the two.
Lu Yanshi knew that Feng Wanyu would wait, so he had to come from thousands of miles away; Feng Wanyu knew that Lu Yanshi would come, so she had to wait forever.
