When a director of this level releases a new work, everyone will pay more attention to the director himself than to the film itself.
Just like when I started to slide down from short comments to long comments, there were more than three remarks about whether Hirokazu Koreeda was "acclimatized". I have watched too few movies, especially French movies. I have no position to evaluate how he performed this time, so I can only talk about the movie itself.
This story is indeed very Japanese and very Hirokazu-eda, family, mother and daughter, reunion after a long absence, and unraveling the knot, every element is quite "Deeper than the Sea" and "Never Walking". But I have to say that Xilin Shu is really amazing, especially for me, without the movie where she was the protagonist, I didn't cry, why would someone just move in front of the camera to make me feel so? Incredible.
But I understand very well the role played by Catherine Denevue, a well-known actress who focuses on her career. Such a role seems to be selfish and arrogant, ignoring the feelings of those around her, but she is actually loved silently by them. The daughter's actor is indeed a French girl at first glance, and she is very beautiful and tasteful.
Going back to the story itself, the triple mother-daughter relationship, the plot of the film inserted in the middle is rather vague, maybe this is art... What I am not very satisfied with is that this movie gives me a very shallow feeling, with very shallow emotions, Lines and stories are on point. It's the usual lack of emotion in Hirokazu Kore-eda's films, and there are very few people making noises (which is what I like very much), but for this drama, it seems a little too shallow, to the point of being a bit perfunctory.
Could it be a subtitle translation issue? Of course, I'm not qualified to pick and choose the work of the subtitle group...
