I gave it four stars when I first watched it, but it was changed to five stars when I watched it again. I was not a fan of literary films at first, but these big boring films in Ceylon gradually affected my taste.
I fell in love with this film from 12 minutes, when my father and son drove together for the first time to Poplar Forest. For some reason, this scene brings back all my fond memories of the summer shade of my hometown. I love the poplar tree because it gives me pleasant and tender memories. Just like Jia Zhangke said when he commented on Ceylon, through the films of Ceylon, we will find that we still have a hometown far away. Turkey is a place I have never been to, but I suddenly feel that there is my nostalgia here.
In addition to the blue sky and white clouds day after day, the large green poplar forest, the characters in the film are also ordinary and lovely.
It seems that every family has a stubborn old man. The old father in the film guards the poplar trees he has planted for 30 years, refuses to cut them down for land deeds, and insists on fighting the government to the end. Neighbors did not understand him, and even his wife and son were not on his side, and he still went his own way. And I want him to win, not only because the woods are too important to him, but because the woods are really beautiful, and beautiful things shouldn't be destroyed.
The little boy who kept an egg in his pocket for 40 days and asked his father for a music watch for his aunt's help was very much like our childhood. This child and this old father are actually the same kind of people, and they put the most effort into what they care about in their hearts. They are all pure and lovely.
Our protagonist, the photographer Muzaffar, also has fun that middle-aged people don't often have. He made movies that didn't make money, he took nine-year-old Ali to observe the tortoise together, and he took all the young and old to act as actors for him. He also eavesdropped on his parents' conversations in the middle of the night, taught little Ali to cheat and put eggs, and also strictly asked his parents to act. It has the secular world of adults, but it is difficult to hide the simplicity of the heart.
This is the town in May in Ceylon's memory, and it is also the summer hometown I want to go back to.
