The whole plot is not completely satisfactory, some things seem redundant, some seem rushed. Like the male protagonist's acceptance and trust in his father-in-law, and his later girlfriends. Feelings and thinking take time to brew. Western films sometimes seem too fast at this point, which is related to their way of thinking, so I can understand. The story is always related to backgammon, and finally echoes the title of the game. A chess king battle seems to be the grandfather's last teaching and love to the grandson, and the memory of the hero is also played back little by little with the rolling dice. . I think this part is very well shot, but I don't agree with it in general, and of course I don't like the part where the dice split at the end. It should be said that this section does more damage to the tone of the story (family affection) than strengthens it. In my opinion, the male protagonist puts the car on the table, then goes directly to the section back to Germany, and then ends, which has more aftertaste. Of course, despite this, the story's rendering of family affection is still very sufficient. The grandfather and grandson rode tandem bicycles and sprinted forward on the road of life with laughter, which moved people's hearts.
However, I never had the urge to cry, because the constant insertion of the past made people feel heavy, and the happy feeling was swept away by the black mood. In fact, the story does not shy away from this atmosphere. On the contrary, compared with the current family affection, the desire for freedom in the past is more intense. Although it is only an interlude, the degree of reflection on the end of that era is not weak. In this respect, this film can be said to be between "The Storm" and "Goodbye Lenin", not as depressing as the former, but obviously more painful than the latter. So, from this point of view, perhaps the battle of the chess kings in which the two lines are combined into one at the end of the film is not so much the education of the grandfather's last love for the grandson as it is a declaration: the future of freedom belongs to you!
The world is vast, don't worry when you feel lost about the road ahead, hope may be hiding around the next corner.
At the same time, let us be grateful for every moment of freedom we have now hard-earned.
