The film is based on this historical fact.
Forcibly recruited laborers, like Li Jiangyu, the band leader played by Huang Zhengmin, were deceived by familiar policemen and said they were going to work in Japan, there were gangsters like Su Zhixie who ran away, and there were strong men who were forcibly arrested. There are teenagers who were dragged onto the boat, and students who were coerced for the so-called establishment of greater East Asia co-prosperity.
When the destination is reached, the tragic life begins.
Regarding research materials on Japanese labor, only one paper by Jilin University scholar Chen Jingyan was found online. I remember when I was a child, I read a report about an interview with a laborer returning from Japan. Many of his fellow villagers died of exhaustion during labor. He escaped into the mountains by chance, but did not know how to get out. It is estimated that he lived in the mountains for nearly two years until Japan was defeated. At the end of the film, Park Moo-young, a special agent played by Song Joong-ki, leads the living laborers on a boat home, and sees the mushroom cloud rising from the atomic bomb dropped by the United States on Nagasaki from a distance.
The damage caused by the war of aggression launched by Japanese militarism to the people of Asia cannot be forgotten. A few days ago, a documentary about the lives of comfort women, "Twenty Two," was launched in theaters and was a hit at the box office.
The comfort woman, played by singer Lee Jung Hyun, told Cui Qixing about her experience of becoming a comfort woman. She was constantly sent to the Japanese by her compatriots and sent to the Japanese military camp. She witnessed her companions being tortured to death because of illness. To play this role, Lee Jung Hyun lost 7kg. In the shootout scene, Li Zhenxian needed to shoot with a 5kg weapon, and she did not need a substitute to complete the shooting. During the interview, she said that she learned from the actual experience of the comfort women that they were humiliated and persecuted, and they were all skinny and skinny. Although the director did not force her to lose weight, she reduced her weight to 36 kg in a short period of time to get closer to the role.
There is no shortage of fresh meat in the film. 11-year-old Jin Xiu'an plays Li Jiangyu's daughter, who was caught on the island at a young age and almost became a comfort woman. Don't look at the young age of the actors, the acting skills are not covered. I just went to the island and entertained the Japanese army, crying and performing songs and dances while begging for my own protection.
Director Ryu Seung-wan won the Best Director Award at the 36th Korea Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Best Director at the 52nd Korea Baeksang Arts Awards for his film "Veteran". The cast is full of acting skills. As a group film, every actor and character has a shining point. Especially the role played by Huang Zhengmin has changed a lot, from the humble beginning of the film, to the courage to testify against Mr. Yin with evidence in his hand, and finally to the mad slaughter of laborers by the Japanese, Li Jiangyu assisted Park Wuying to lead the laborers Escape, complete the transformation of the ego to protect itself to the larger ego and the enemy. So Ji-sub went from being a troublemaker to a desperate fight with the Japanese, covering the escape of the laborers, and fighting to the death side by side with the originally weak and bullied comfort women. The agent Park Moo-young, who was ordered to rescue Mr. Yin, just wanted to complete the task and take Mr. Yin away. Forced to work together with the laborers, he found that Mr. Yin had betrayed, so he decided to rescue the laborers.
Of course, cinema is the art of regret. In the film, the villain, Mr. Yin, appeared as a positive character and was supported by the workers. Three teenagers who tried to escape and pass on information came to say goodbye, and they were captured by the Japanese army before they reached the sea. Cui Qixing and Han traitor competed for the position of supervisor, and he was almost able to kill Han traitor, but was persuaded by Mr. Yin's high-sounding words of unity. Park Moo-young plans to rescue Mr. Yin from the island, but accidentally discovers that Mr. Yin is a traitor of Han. During the heated debate, Mr. Yin looked just and righteous, with a sense of sight of "Snowpiercer". At the end of the film, Li Jiangyu was seriously injured and entrusted the child to Wu Ying on the boat, just like "Train to Busan".
There is no routine, no kimchi country film and television. The flaws are not concealed, plus this same history of humiliation, the film is worth watching.
