From the start of coal mining in September 1890, to the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, to the full-scale outbreak of the Pacific War, Gunkanjima, which had a huge impact on the Japanese military industry, was abandoned in January 1974 under Japan's new energy policy in the 1970s. In 2015, Gunkanjima was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Meiji Industrial Revolution in Japan.
After Japan's application to the World Heritage List, Foreign Minister Fumi Kishida said shamelessly: "Forcing laborers to work in harsh conditions does not mean forced labor." Until today, the Japanese government has not fulfilled the relevant advice of UNESCO regarding historical facts, including forced expropriation.
