The first time I saw this director's work was around January or February 2020, and the title was "I Killed My Mom". The second is this movie. I have watched two films in total, and I don't quite understand the director's work style, but after watching Killing Mom, one thing I understand is: "It shouldn't be the style I like".
It doesn't matter, the point is, I don't know why I have been forced to contact frequently on social networks before watching the film, so that the director's position in my mind was actually, Internet celebrity? Some gay-related chasing pretty boys everywhere? Although you don't pay attention to him, due to the similarity of the activity trajectories, his various activities are often recommended with high frequency. So for a few years, you ignored such an internet celebrity Gay, until one day you finally saw another director recommend killing your mother.
Even the preview of this two-horse biography has been crossed countless times, because I feel that I don't know what I am talking about and it looks boring again.
So in fact, the process of watching these two films is a bit subtle. It seems that the actor participating in too many variety shows will affect his performance in the future. To me, there is a kind of reality show that extends to the movie.
It's okay to kill my mother. After all, the film was made more than ten years ago. The director and starring's appearance in the film is still different from the social profile I have seen, and it is basically not a drama. The Legend of Two Horses will not work, I only feel that he is playing himself throughout the whole process, and even a little embarrassed at one point (for some reason).
The viewing process of Killing Mom is not painful, just forget it after watching it. Just remember him fighting with his mother. As a youth film, it is not youthful in my opinion. Although the protagonist (if I remember correctly) is a 16-year-old high school student, it does not show the rebellious confusion and family relationships of a teenager high school student, but what I see is a relationship between two very independent adults. Discussing mutual relationships is the same as discussing any relationship that somehow doesn't last long but can't be given up. The venerable order between parents and children is weakened, and it discusses an unsolved proposition about "connection" that does not disappear with the end of adolescence and so-called maturity.
So more than ten years later, he is still arguing with that mother. Even arguing becomes boring.
But this time the focus is not on mothers and quarrels. It is about the beautiful story of director, screenwriter, costume stylist and starring Lan.
After letting go of the struggle and accepting the fact that he was playing himself, the film looked easy. The whole process was very peaceful. It was like two hours of quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the world. I am grateful.
The whole plot is beautiful, and everywhere reflects the classic elements of Japanese BL, such as tame dyeing, games, betting, booing, doubles, fake dramas, and so on.
After watching it, I thought that Matt hid Max's recommendation letter at the beginning of the film. At the latest, after Maas said, "I'm not coming back for Christmas." Every time I see someone complaining about Lan's directing ability, that he is the highlight of his debut, and that he has made no progress in Cannes many times, I feel wronged and angry for him. Don't his acting skills deserve to be criticized? Um? my orchid? (I love him)
It can be said that the whole film makes me think that Lan still has acting skills only at that moment of the watchtower. He only revealed his true feelings when he was really obsessed with the concept of "mother". The other parts are using acting to prove that he is a director.
I hope that one day I can see Ran, the main character trained by other directors, in other blockbusters.
In addition, there are some plot arrangements that are not convincing but very important in the film. For example, in the seven-year-old painting that has been preserved to the present, the "just kept" component always looks larger than the "deliberately preserved" component. Friends who have known each other since childhood and are still in contact with each other have a few childhood marks of each other. But at the same time, the complexity of the script is doubled, which may not be very friendly to the screenwriter.
In the utility room, when everyone was sighing about the hot romance, I was thinking, how did he get up there. Matt took off his pants and ran away, but Mas didn't chase him out. Except for the plot development and the character setting, the platform was too high. At least Lan had to step on a small bench or be carried down by someone.
Even so, this movie seems easy to me because it opens up a new idea for me that "a teahouse environment where many people gather is also loving". It can be said that it has subverted the concept that I have always believed that "the weak is the blessing". At a certain moment, there was even a deformed idea of "it seems very happy to get together with a lot of acquaintances and quarrel to split up the family property". It can be concluded that these positive thinking content should all come from the creator's real experience and real perception. It hits the heart more than any violently designed dramatic conflict.
If there is any difficulty in this film, the difficulty is that I can't have as many loving motherly friends who love me as the protagonist in the film.
In the part where the movie is all about the aftertaste, the aftertaste of "The Legend of Two Horses" is far longer for me than "Killing Mom". The latter has no aftertaste to me. I can't even get any emotional feedback on the painting sex(?) that all pros and non-pros relish. The whole film doesn't seem to exist, I just heard people say it.
This may be due to the fact that there is only one mother among the murdered mothers, and both of them are mothers. "A man's worst nightmare is that the enemy is your family." Mom doesn't matter, love is the most important thing.
In the end, there are two things I don't understand.
One is that Matt by the lake said a box in front of Maas, "are you ready for your close-up?"
