The story begins with a mission of the IMF team. Kittridge, the leader of the IMF team, ordered Ethan Hunt and Jim’s team to carry out a mission to catch extremely secret disc thieves. However, this mission was completely designed by the CIA. The disc in the mission is fake, and the real purpose of the CIA is to catch the ghosts of the IMF team who also want to get this disc.
After everything was prepared, Ethan and his team members began to act. When the task was about to be completed, things changed. All members of the IMF team except Ethan were killed. Kittridge then suspects that the only surviving Ethan is the inner ghost. When meeting with Kittridge, Ethan learned that he was the only survivor, and the inner ghost wanted this disc to give it to the intelligence dealer MAX. At the same time, Ethan found that he had been framed by a real inner ghost, so he escaped from the CIA and returned to the stronghold of the IMF team's preparation mission. There, he succeeded in getting in touch with MAX as a ghost through the clues he discovered through the exchange with Kittridge, hoping to meet with him, and warned that MAX discs are not real, so as to gain MAX's trust. At this time, the group member-also Jim's wife-Claire suddenly returned to the stronghold, and she explained that she was only returning to the stronghold at the agreed time. Ethan was surprised and suspected that she was the real ghost, but out of love and trust for Claire, Ethan did not immediately make a judgment.
Ethan met with MAX as agreed, and he and MAX agreed to use real discs as a bargaining chip in exchange for the inner ghost. With the help of Claire, Ethan recruited his companions Krieger and Luther, and obtained the discs from the CIA headquarters. When a group of people hid in a secret stronghold, Ethan noticed that Krieger was extremely obsessed with the disc. At the same time, Ethan discovered that the bible used by the ghost to connect with MAX came from the hotel where Jim had stayed before, and the truth gradually emerged. The only person he trusted was Luther.
The CIA learned that Ethan had stolen the disc and framed Ethan's parents in order to lure Ethan into a snare. Upon learning of this, Ethan called the CIA headquarters, and at the same time deliberately revealed his location, suggesting that Kittridge was coming. After the phone call, Jim, who was supposed to be dead, appeared unexpectedly. He told Ethan that he had survived by chance and hoped to catch the inner ghost with Ethan. Ethan has understood the ins and outs of the matter, and all that is left is to set up the game ingeniously to catch the traitors in one fell swoop.
Ethan informed MAX that it was trading on a moving train, and Kittridge also got news from Ethan and boarded the train. On the train, Ethan completed the transaction with MAX, but MAX got in touch with the ghost, Jim, and planned to kill Ethan. Ethan sent Claire to get paid, and met Jim who was waiting there. The two were accomplices. It turns out that Claire would suddenly return to the secret stronghold after the mission was over to destroy the evidence against Jim, but unfortunately Ethan escaped the capture of the CIA, and Claire pretended that he had survived the assassination of the inner ghost. But this Jim was pretending to be Ethan, and Claire was unprepared and told the truth to Ethan: The frame of Ethan was planned. At this time, the real Jim walked out of the dark and the three confronted each other. Ethan carried a hidden camera with him and sent everything to the CIA director Kittridge who was also on the train. Jim knew that the matter had been revealed, and at the same time saw Claire's hidden feelings for Ethan, he killed Claire, and wanted to escape with Krieger who had met him.
After the war, Krieger and Jim both died, and the CIA captured MAX. Ethan cleared away his grievances and quit his job with the CIA. After bidding farewell to Luther, he embarked on the departing flight alone, but on the plane, there was another mission waiting for him...
