There was already a hint of disappointment, but I didn't expect the movie to bring even greater disappointment. I just want to use two words to describe how I feel.
Although I am not familiar with Hong Kong comics, I can clearly feel the traces of comic adaptations. It is said that it was adapted from a very popular manga, but why does it seem so weak?
During the screening process, some people called out from time to time, "Isn't it okay? It's okay?" It seems that the director really underestimated the audience's imagination and understanding. Art is about subtlety, not everything that needs to be made clear. The background of the two brothers in the movie is very clearly told through Wang Xiaolong's mother, and Wang Xiaolong's mother taught him to be a good person, not to do bad things, and to return to Longhumen when he grows up. It appeared twice, which made me suspect that the screenwriter was also deeply involved in the syllogistic structure of the elementary school composition that echoes before and after? And in order to show the deep brotherhood, a group of bad children bullied the younger brother, and the elder brother came forward to protect the younger brother... Such things make the audience lose the space for imagination. Can't we change the narrative method? Is our narrative style so monotonous? How does it look like a primary school student writing an essay? From a certain point of view, a movie is actually a means of narrating things. Whether the narration is good or not is a sign of the quality of the movie. "Dragon Tiger Gate" is really like a standard composition for elementary school students, and it fails very much.
Some time ago, I watched "Slaying the Wolf", which was also written by Yip Weixin and also starred by Donnie Yen, but it felt completely different. No matter from the fighting, the script, the acting, "Kill" is even better, and can even occupy a place in the history of Hong Kong martial arts films. The face-to-face encounter between "Killing" and "Dragon" is like a dialogue between an adult and a little furry child, which is really not the same level.
For "Dragon Tiger Gate", there is nothing else, if there is, that is, it is best not to waste time on this film.
