Nami's Hand - Intentional Analysis

Near the end, a sculptural hand emerges from the sea, slowly, hoisted by a helicopter, and finally suspended in mid-air. This huge "hand" sank in the sea in a posture that wanted to grasp something but couldn't grasp it, and finally stretched out to the sky, reaching a direction, a distance. This hand is the epitome of human beings, always wanting, always facing, but never reaching. Therefore, everything has a thesis and an antithesis, and there is a contradiction that will never be bought and sold. This contradiction extends to the race, the state apparatus, the class, and the subject. Such a contradiction gives people a false hope, as if something can be bought and sold. Work hard, get what you can, but in the end everything will be "on the road", and the road will never end. The pain lies in the inability to understand one's own subjectivity, and such subjectivity must and will never be understood, so it is also doomed to eternal pain, eternal in the fog.

Landscape in the Mist quotes

  • Orestis: If I were to shout, who would hear me out of the armies of angels?

  • Voula: [writing a letter to her father] Dear father, we are writing because we have decided to come and find you. We have never seen you and we miss you. We talk about you all the time. Mummy will be upset that we've gone. Deep down inside we love her, don't think we don't, but she doesn't understand anything. We don't know what you look like. Alexander says all sorts of things. He dreams about you. We miss you so much. Sometimes on my way home from school I think I hear footsteps behind me, your footsteps, and when I turn to look there's no one. Then I feel very lonely. We don't want to be a burden to you. We just want to get to know you and then we'll go away again.
