Cthulhu lovers are ecstatic! ! !
Audiences looking forward to science fiction, monsters or traditional horror films may be disappointed.
Because of the above elements, they are contrary to the core of Cthulhu.
For Cthulhu, the most important thing is to portray humans’ fear of the unknown.
The following part of the quote comes from "Summary of Weird Novel Creation"
Not science fiction
The oldest and strongest human emotion is fear. And the oldest and strongest fear is the fear of the unknown
No matter what kind of technology human beings have, there is ultimately a fear called the unknowable.
Cthulhu is not science fiction. Technology is only a background assistant to Cthulhu, making the story more reasonable. The Cthulhu series will not spend a lot of time on the description of science and technology, unless that science and technology come from outside of human beings.
Lovecraft calls himself a mechanistic materialist. Weird novels are a romance to him that breaks this mechanistic theory. Lovecraft therefore has two sides, the mechanistic side and the romantic and weird side. As the author, he insisted on describing daily events with scientific facts when writing strange novels. On the one hand, he increased credibility, and on the other hand, he gave readers the greatest shock at the moment when the surprise event occurred.
Not a monster
Fear and the unknown are often closely related. If the feeling of fear is not emphasized, it will be difficult to describe the destroyed natural laws in a persuasive way, and the sense of combing on the scale of the universe.
Cthulhu will not describe monsters in detail. The subject of Cthulhu is the unknown, and the monster is the unknown carrier. But the mechanical aspect of Lovecraft allows him to give more biological settings when creating unknown monsters, and more theological or physical settings when creating some cosmic unknowns. Think time is the most interesting and dramatic ability.
Most Cthulhu creatures have complete settings, but in the performance of the story, they will never be fully shown at once. Instead, in the repeated surprises, when human beings face fear, they show this kind of unknown. Researchers in Cthulhu may often say: "Wow, this is a species that has never been seen before!"
Not a horror movie
What weird novels need most is not behavior, but atmosphere
Cthulhu will not scare people.
Lovecraft believes that the most important thing in bizarre novels is to portray the human response to fear. This reaction is usually crazy. Therefore, in Cthulhu’s tabletop RPG game, SAN exists as a very important attribute, expressing the madness of the player's character. This irrational madness is also one of the romances that Lovecraft pursues to break the mechanical theory.
But there are still many scary passages in the movie. I think this is related to the difference between the forms of novels and movies, because novels can hardly express the feeling of shocking you, while movies can. So since it can be trimmed, it's scary on the whole, and it's pretty good.
Cthulhu's World View
Cthulhu has a complete and huge worldview after sorting out and discussing the second setting.
Although the author himself describes this out of fear, he may not be willing to make some detailed settings. But it is undeniable that this perfected worldview that has undergone multiple creations has given the Cthulhu series a wider range of charm. It also makes people who understand the world view of Cthulhu a pleasant surprise to see this movie.
But for viewers who don't understand Cthulhu's worldview, that feeling is lost.
In this movie, Deep Diver and Dagon appear.
The monster watched by the unintelligible audience: "Wow, what a big monster, it looks so disgusting."
The monster seen by the audience: "Wow!! Deep dive!! Dagon!!! Face the ancient gods!! 1D100!!!"
I attached Baidu Encyclopedia below, I believe you will find that it is quite consistent with the movie setting.
Dagon (Do Ming Dagong) and females Hydra (Mother Hydra) as the Old Ones Cthulhu (Cthulhu) from those who exist, they are deep one (Deep Ones) leader, Father and Mother of God . It is said that Dagon and Hydra are smaller inferior old dominators, and some people think that they are just long-lived large deep divers.
"Deep one" is enshrined in the family eldest "Father Dagon ( Dagon great g)" (Dagon) and their spouses, "Mother of God Hydra" (Hydra) and all aquatic life ruler " "Sulu" race. In order to serve these beings and to be able to carry out the tasks assigned by them at any time, so as to inhabit the seabed.
Deep divers are humanoid races that live on the bottom of the sea. The appearance is a fish head human body. The main color of the body is gray-green, but it has a white abdomen. There are webs between the fingers of the limbs. The body is covered with scales. The eyes are protruding like fish eyes. It does not close, and has gills on the neck. When moving on land, it uses two feet or limbs to jump in. It is described as a frog-like fish or a fish-like frog in the relevant classics. It will have a thick fishy smell on its body. Taste, many of them are completely out of human form. Although it may seem low-energy from the outside, deep dives are highly intelligent races that will live forever unless they are killed. They will use fish and gold to trade living sacrifices with the inhabitants of the island.
Final words
If you know Cthulhu and watch it with the idea of throwing dice at the character in your heart, this movie will be very interesting.
If you are interested in Cthulhu and deep sea adventures, and don't expect to watch science fiction, monsters and horror films, this movie is still a passing movie worth watching.
It is said to pass because it is too weak in the depiction of characters and motives, which makes the film breathless.
In fact, this kind of setting that weakens the conflict between characters and drama is quite in line with the atmosphere of the original novel, but it does look general as a movie.
But the handsome young lady is great.
The ending is okay, I especially like the loneliness created by the last scene.
But after all, Cthulhu is niche, so it makes sense for the box office to hit the street.
