Lust and Caution || Lama Dash's Lost City of Desires

About this film, I have written two texts "Lama Dashi's Lost City of Desire" and "Desire is a Drop of Water"

Lama Dash's Lost City of Desires

Front Press: Movies similar to the theme of seducing monks can only be made by directors with deep connotations. For example, South Korean director Kim Ki-deok's "Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Another Spring", a young monk fell in love with an urban woman, but killed his cheating wife after returning to the secular world, and finally returned to the Buddhist temple; Tsui Hark's "Green Snake" seduced Fa Hai... Honestly Said that Tsui Hark's film is really not good. Tsui Hark's martial arts kung fu films are very smooth, and they are good for entertaining the public. If they tell stories with connotation, the difference in humanistic cultivation and rationality is not so lost.

So, what kind of cultivation is the best? In other words, what exactly is practice? For ordinary people, that's why we live... According to the plot of the movie "Samsara", based on what I have seen and heard, I will talk about my own bad views.

things in the story

Synopsis of the movie "Samsara": Lama Dashi, who was in retreat for three years, three months and three days, met Pama, a beautiful and intelligent farm girl, and resolutely decided to take off his cassock and return to the world. After getting married, Dashi and Pama had children, ran a manor, and even had an affair with a maid... The long-lost Sang Neng brought news from Master Apu: My karma is not over yet, we will meet again, I hope you can tell me by then, what is more important - to satisfy a thousand desires, or to overcome one desire?

In the film, Dashi goes around in circles, which inevitably reminds people of Tsangyang Gyatso.

As early as Tsangyang Gyatso's last life, a woman accidentally broke into the door of the living Buddha. At first sight, the living Buddha's nose bleeds continuously, and then predicts that the next life will inevitably suffer a love calamity. When Cangyang Gyatso returned from the rendezvous on the snowy night, he was seen by the housekeeper following the footprints of the snow, which not only broke the thoughts of his lover Maggie Ami, but also ended the reincarnation of the living Buddha in this life.

"When I live in the Potala Palace, I am the biggest king in the snowy area; I am the most beautiful lover in the world when I wander on the streets of Lhasa." Wang is also a king, beautiful and beautiful, but it is difficult to be a man. On the way to the escort, Cangyang Gyatso, who passed away by the Qinghai Lake, was only twenty-three years old, at most a mature child. Even if it is a living Buddha with the brilliance of the sun, the left and right constraints, the trajectory of life, is nothing but the same.

Even if Dashi can retreat for three years, three months and three days, what can he do? To be lucky, Dash's enemy is only himself.

Two watersheds

After attending the harvest meeting and meeting Pama, Dashi returned to the monastery and dreamed of spring every night. Master Apu asked him to find the old monk in the high mountains. After reading the "Persuading the World's Erotic Palace Picture", the enlightenment he got was "Anything you meet is a place of practice!" (If I am not mistaken, the Chinese calligraphy mounted on the picture is: The place of touch is the dojo)

So, there is the theory of "if you don't have it, how can you give it up". Therefore, Dashi made up his mind to return to the secular world.

The well-respected Master Apu couldn't stop Dashi, because he himself couldn't exhaust the end-the karma was not exhausted, so he asked Dashi later: what is more important.

This problem also became the reason why Dashi planned to become a monk again.

It's okay to be a monk or a vulgar. Anyway, in a man's life, there are at most seven opportunities to go back and forth to become a monk (a woman only has one). So at the juncture of twists and turns, what is more important? When Patriarch Bodhidharma was a prince, he heard the words of his master, "Who was me when I was not born, and who was when I was born", so he abandoned the world and left home to practice.

In the film, Dashi uses the worldly life of Buddha Shakyamuni before the age of 29, and he has been reclusive and practiced since the age of five, thus asking whether the enlightenment of the Buddha was triggered by the worldly life, and then quoting what the Buddha once said : "You shouldn't take my teachings by hearsay unless you understand where I stand."

If you can break through this core bone (understand the Buddha's position), you will probably be enlightened soon?

In fact, the Buddha was a prince before he became a monk. Maybe he didn't tell his wife Yasodhara why he wanted to become enlightened, but he said to his father, King Joshua, that the sufferings, contradictions and entanglements in the world cannot be solved by wisdom. .

[When the Buddha was still the Prince of Gautama Siddhartha, his father, the King Sudhan, wanted him to inherit the throne, so he deliberately cultivated him. One day, the prince asked his father about the affairs of the government, and named a minister's actions by name. But society is a complex of contradictions. Innumerable elements are intertwined. , it is impossible to completely solve it. 】

To become a monk, to return to the secular world, to escape from the world—Dashi's life, if not arranged by others, is controlled by desire, and it seems that he has never been his own master.

"Man is a deposed king, and man should know his own nobility." (Pascal)

To face difficulties, or to retreat?

From the question of "how can a drop of water not dry up" to "let it flow into the sea", how many hardships and hardships it takes...

"If you can use your love for me to pursue the Dharma, you can become a Buddha in this life."

Just because of his wife's words, Dashi wanted to go back, "I'll go back with you, I belong there."

With this saying, it's time, it's time to talk about pama.

Why does Pama say, "You can become a Buddha in this life"? (Whether you have reached a certain realm, whether you can become a Buddha, this kind of prophecy can only be expressed to the end of the school who has achieved very high achievements. That is, if you want to know whether you are enlightened, you must tell the enlightened person. Go to seek proof; only saints who have become Buddhas can predict whether someone will become a Buddha in the future; for example, in the past life of Master Ji, I hope that Buddha Shakyamuni can confirm or foretell that he has achieved Arahantship...)

Pama, why?

She was able to see at a glance that Lama Dashi was fascinated by herself, and dared to break the world and marry the person she loved desperately. Even her husband's affair predicted that "it will happen sooner or later"; teaching her son to recognize cold "Let him discover for himself, Don't be overly protective", so much so that the toy lets him do it himself - but, don't forget: Palma's attitude when couples are making out with their children.

The practicing Dashi emphasized: "I said, you can't have sex in front of him."

Here, I must refute the view that "wife Pama is as transparent as a saint even though she is in the world." (Although from the comment section, it is very likely that this is exactly the concept the director wants to convey.)

This is because, some things have to stick to the bottom line.

Palma can predict her husband's affair, and can even say it in advance - in reality, if she really wants to face this fact, can she accept it calmly? While waiting for Dashi to become a monk, she confided in a woman's helplessness, sadness and despair, and even moved out of Yasodhara...

Based on what she did, what I thought of was Moderna. The reason is that when Pama met Lama Dashi, he already had a fiancé - of course, there is also a reason to refute: to pursue his true love, rather than obey the arrangement of fate.

True love, lust, seduction—where is the line between them?

Desire is not our enemy, hypocrisy is. -- Dzongsar Rinpoche.

If I have to use this sentence to annotate the film, I think Dashi does not hesitate to return to the world for what he loves, obeys desire and cheats with a maid, and faces his wife when he wants to escape from the world, but he doesn't know what to do... It is because of the truth, so Confused, and therefore painful. Padma is full of temptation, clear purpose, possessive, and is a metaphor for the noble Yasodhara, rather than an analogy to the Moderna - is this not hypocrisy?

This feeling may be contrary to your conclusion. What is right and what is wrong, what is true and false in the world, what is false and what is true, without a pair of discerning eyes, how can we distinguish...

Which is true, which is false?

Dashi, obviously Cantonese transliteration, Mandarin Chinese may be translated as Tashi, Tibetan probably means auspicious. Similarly, the Buddha's child, Rahula, was translated into Lu He in the film - the focus is on the heroine's name: Pama, Tibetans should not use this word as a name, because in Tibetan it means parent and mother (At least that's what the Andor language says).

Everything is really interesting. Look around, what else should I talk about?

1. Samsara is a Tibetan language, also known as reincarnation, which means the circulation of life. The Chinese translation is "Reincarnation". We all know more and more influential is the documentary "Reincarnation" which has a visual journey across 25 countries in 2011, not this "Samsara".

"Lust and Caution", directed by Ang Lee in 2007, was actually called "Lust, Caution", with a symbol in the middle, probably because he knew that the French director Bing Naren had done it - the film "Lust, Caution" released in 2001 Samsara".

It took seven years for director Bing Naren to create "Samsara" in the early stage. In order to find an actor suitable for the role of Samsara, he had visited many countries in Europe and knew that he had obtained Zhong Liti's information from his agent... ...Actually, the Chinese translation of this film as "Lust and Caution" is still very appropriate.

2. In the movie, the twenty-year-old Dashi was able to retreat as a deity for more than three years, and his concentration was very deep, like ordinary people. So how long can a person retreat into meditation?

It is said that when Master Xuanzang was on his way to India, he also found an old monk who entered the meditation in the Himalayas. When I asked him, people said that he was a person from the age of Buddha Kasyapa, who was waiting for Buddha Shakyamuni to be born. Master Xuanzang told the old man that Buddha Shakyamuni had been in Nirvana for more than a thousand years, and then the old monk was about to enter samadhi again. Even if Maitreya Buddha was born, no one will tell you! He thought: Yes! In the end, it was Master Xuanzang who asked him to go to Chang'an City for reincarnation - this person was the first Master Guanji in history to represent the emperor as a monk. (The second ancestor of the Wisdom Law Xiangzong is also a famous three-car monk. There are many allusions and materials.)

Ten years ago, when I was working in Jiaxing, Zhejiang, a colleague from Zhuji said that in their village there was a person from an unknown age who "sit" there. The villagers teamed up to build a thatched hut to keep out the rain, and after a while, they would help him cut his nails and trim his hair... At that time, I just thought it was nonsense, and I would never believe that such things happen in this world. That is to say verbally, "Take me to see it!" And then it's gone. Besides, how did I know that I could use a "singing bowl" as a chime to wake him up from his meditation.

3. At the beginning of the film, the eagle grabs the stone...

Of course it would be true, the eagle grabbed the white stone, threw it from the air, smashed it and ate it (it should help digestion, similar to a chicken's gizzard, which needs to peck at the sand). For smashing a sheep, it can only be a coincidence, the wisdom of egg-laying animals has not yet reached the stage of making a labor tool. In addition to the exaggerated plot of the movie, it can also be explained: the fate of all lives is impermanent.

4. The greasy windproof cotton curtain, the dancing posture of the Qiangba God machine and the exaggerated face Nuo... These scenes are really in a lama monastery. Especially the little lama who dozed off--a little lama I photographed with me. It's the same. He dozed off after chanting the scriptures. It's cute and realistic.

5. The labor scenes and wedding ceremonies of the Tibetans are about the same, they are very pompous (after all, it was nearly 20 years ago, and it was still at the foot of the Himalayas where the economy was not very developed). Especially women who harvest wheat, men who chat and drink—in Tibet, the responsibilities of men and women have very strict boundaries.

6. If you have to find out what is fictitious, I am afraid it is the scene where Dashi and the Indian maid have an affair. Although it is romantic and beautiful, it is too exaggerated, right?

What should be complained most is actually erotica. In a two-hour-long film, according to the needs of the plot, a total of no more than three minutes of sexual entanglement is arranged. How can it become the main stunt of the film's publicity?

If this is used as a selling point, the publisher is really getting the wrong routine...

7. Dashi has been able to practice meditation for three years, yet he is still deceived?

The noun of the Mahayana cultivation stage is Bodhisattva. Only by cultivating the Bodhisattva in the ten grounds can he become a Buddha when he attains the wonderful enlightenment. What needs to be reminded is that when the practice reaches the Bodhisattva of the Three Grounds, can you not turn back, and you will not be like Da Shi, entangled in where to go. The reason is: I have realized what the Buddha said. Although the reason is an epiphany, things must be gradually repaired. That is to say, the truth has been understood, and then one step at a time, and slowly become transcendent.

There are four Arhats in Theravada, and when one reaches the fourth Arahant, they can no longer be born and die in stages and escape from samsara.

8. Yasodhara was the wife of the Buddha before he became a monk. At that time, the Buddha was the prince of Gautama Siddhartha. Many allusions say that their son Rahula was born after the Buddha left home.

Regarding the marriage between Yasodhara and Shakyamuni Buddha, it should be counted from the time when the Buddha was lit. At that time, the Buddha was still a practitioner. When he wanted to make offerings to the Buddha, he met Yasodhara who was holding a lotus flower. As for the practitioner who wants to buy a lotus for a lot of money to make offerings to the Buddha, Yasodhara asked him to make a vow to "be married forever and ever"; and the condition of the practitioner is: if she will not stop him from giving up everything in the future, he will leave his home and go his way. , without any difficulty, he agreed.

Since then, the two have been husband and wife all their lives. This long-lasting marriage has only really been accomplished in this life. Prince Gautama Siddhartha, who lives in the secular world, if it is not for his wife Yasodhara, there may be very few opportunities to leave the palace, and it may not be so easy to be sympathetic to the suffering of the people. And the accomplished Buddha also became a monk in Yasodhara, and she also attained the fruit of an arahant.

9. Moderna is Sanskrit, and translated into Chinese, it is called "small family species", which is not honorable. Subsistence from low-level occupations, sorcery, and will also release Gu.

The story of the Lady of Moderna who seduced Ananda: Ananda came into the city with a altar, and the Lady of Moderna fell in love at first sight, and her mother's mantra caused Ananda to lose her mind and body, and then the Buddha ordered Manjushri Bodhisattva to rescue him.

——The original text of the Shurangama Sutra (At that time, Ananda, because of begging for food, went through a prostitute room and suffered a great illusion. The modern girl, with the mantra of the first Brahma of Sa Vikara, ingested the prostitution table. The body of precepts. The Tathagata knows him, the lustful art is added, and the fast is completed. The king, ministers, and elders and laymen have all come to follow the Buddha, wishing to hear the essentials of the Dharma. At that time, the World-Honored One will put a hundred treasures on the top, fearless light, and be born in the light, Qianye Baolian, who has the incarnation of Buddha, sits in a cross-legged posture, proclaims the divine mantra. Instructs Manjushri, and protects the mantra. Eliminates the evil mantra, and rewards Ananda and Moderna, and returns to the Buddha's place.)

In the "Modernga Sutra", it is said that Ananda was thirsty when he was passing by and asked the woman who was drawing water for water to drink. At first sight, Madanga fell in love with her, and went home and threatened her with death, asking her mother to confuse Ananda with illusions...

10. There is a saying that the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni would have been circulated in the world for 3,500 years. Since women are allowed to become ordained, it will be subtracted from 500 years (from Shakyamuni Buddha, who was living in the world. It has a history of 2,500 years from spreading the Dharma and Nirvana to the present time. It is estimated that there are still 500 years before the demise of the Dharma.)

Difficult, not difficult?

"If you practice samadhi, you will be born out of the dust. If you don't get rid of the lustful mind, you will not be able to get out of the dust. No matter how wise you are, meditation will appear.

This can also explain why Dashi, who originally wanted to become a monk, lost his home...

Lust, precepts; once the lust precepts are broken, it will be out of control; years of hard work will be destroyed in one fell swoop.

We all know that there are five fundamental precepts: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking. Among lay disciples, killing is the first precept, and among monks, the first is to abstain from prostitution. This is because, not abstaining from lust and not reincarnation, this is the root of life and death.

In reincarnation, what's wrong? Or should I say, what good would it be to be a reincarnation tool that can't make decisions by itself!

Cultivation is to be your own master. For example, Master Apu can not only know that his deadline is approaching, but also predict that "we will meet again"... For those who have no cultivation skills, it is simply a fantasy. Ordinary people don't even know when they will die, let alone where they will go after death.

Those who don’t practice enough to reach the world will fall into the dilemma of not knowing where to go. As for those who practice very shallowly, or those who don’t practice much at all?

Don't tell me, sometimes it seems quite comfortable. For example, Du Hua, who harvested grain for fraud, can make his children cry when they should cry, and shut up when they shouldn't... It's really mighty! If the reincarnation is true, then what will happen when time passes and it is his turn to be "disciplined" by others?

Also Ma Yang, this person who can give up his fiancée to others and doesn't allow others to break the "habits here", okay? The first question is, he who is submissive can really distinguish what is good or what is bad? In this world, how many animals are dying, and how many insects do not survive a summer - do they want their fate to be like that? To reason with such a person is like Xia Zongyubing.

postscript

I'm thinking, why did such a good film fail to be released in the mainland at the beginning, why did it attract attention again after more than ten years? Looking up the previous text messages, most of them even made gimmicks in the name of "eroticism" to promote... Anyway, I still read it now, it seems to be a bit of an afterthought, like watching fire from the other side.

Fire, feel, and get what you deserve. Think carefully, ask questions, try to share:

What are we living in this world for?

Some people say, no matter what, make money first!

Let’s not talk about it, but look back: in the past 30 years, how many “richest men” who have been in the limelight for a while are still in prison; what’s more, even if ordinary people are so busy that their buttocks are smoking, it is solved. Just food and clothing.

A lot of people don't actually like money that much. In the final analysis, they just want to live a better life for themselves. But, how? There are eight hardships in life, let's not talk about birth, old age, sickness and death, the whole "Samsara", there is no resentment, no desire, it seems to be just saying love and parting.

After all, this world is yin and yang, and they coordinate with each other. If a more accurate label is given to the couple, it is probably: the journey of life, walking together... It's a pity: "The world is safe and secure, and it is not as good as the Tathagata and the emperor."

Some people say that I like to go through the wind and frost, and the feeling of all kinds of tastes in my heart is life.

No matter what, the premise is that you are really willing to bear it and will not regret it. People who can do this are amazing!

The root cause of all sentient beings’ afflictions is attachment. We always think that this body is mine. Little do they know that after a hundred years, dust will return to dust, and soil will return to soil. Honestly, we are all ignorant people and suffer in this world as a result.

Desire is a drop of water

The sky and the sea are in love, because the distance is too far to hold hands. Desires rise to the air, and the sea rides the wings of the wind to touch the face of the sky; thoughts turn into clouds, and raindrops are the tears left when the sky weeps for the sea; after the rain, the sky is fine, and the rainbow appears, so they have a link. A colorful trip with hands...

In this long-lasting love, the sky and the sea interpret the most perfect love in the world. Such a beautiful fairy tale is about to be moved to tears!

A branch, a stream down: sinking, rotting, stumbling over rocks, or being held in a whirlpool, broken in a waterfall...what if neither? It will flow into the sea. This is Samsara//Lust and Caution, Pama's answer to the children, following the theme of "How can a drop of water not dry up - let it flow into the sea".

It happened when Lama Dashi, who had returned to the secular world, was tempted by a maid and worried that he would not be able to control himself, so he asked his wife Pama to dismiss them because he did not need to hire someone to work. Instead, Pama asked, why persecute the poor workers?

In the end, Dashi still failed to withstand the temptation. When Pama, who was about to be driven home, saw him, he was ridiculed by the cheating maid. "She said it long ago, it will happen sooner or later."

If the director arranged for Pama to see this scene with his own eyes (catching the rape in bed), how should this scene be played?

If life is not acting, what else do we do?

I often think about how wonderful it would be if there was only one life and everyone came into this world by chance! Because life is nothing but a few decades, no matter how difficult it is, grit your teeth and stand firm, and it will pass.

If not?

We merged into the sea, rose to the sky, and dripped down again...and it started again and again and again and again. Why should it be so? Besides being drawn by desire, is there a second answer?

This is the subtext of "What is more important: to satisfy a thousand desires, or to conquer one?" - some people say that desires cannot be restrained.

Because of poverty, many evil deeds are incapable of being carried out. This is poverty, a place worthy of our gratitude. Since it can't be done, what happens to those uncontrollable desires?
